Shocker: 17-year-old TN medical aspirant commits suicide due to NEET...Second death in three days!

In a shocking piece of news, a 17-year-old medical aspirant in Tamil Nadu has committed suicide on Monday, exactly a day after writing the NEET exam. In what has become the second NEET-related death in less than three days, the police have revealed that 17-year-old Kanimozhi had been under depression about her performance in the exam and expressed fear to her parents that she can't clear the exam and secure a medical admission.

According to reports, Kanimozhi was a native of Sathampadi village in Ariyalur district and she was the younger daughter of Karunanidhi and Vijayalakshmi, who are both advocates. As a medical aspirant, Kanimozhi had written the NEET exam on Sunday. It was her first attempt and after writing the exam, she felt frustrated that she can't clear it and chase her medical dreams. On Monday night, she had ended her life by committing suicide.

Kanimozhi has taken the extreme step of ending her life when her parents had gone to a nearby village. When her parents returned, they were shocked to witness that their daughter had committed suicide. The incident was informed to the Udayarpalayam police station following which the officials had rushed to the spot. The police had registered a case and sent the body to the Jayankondam government hospital to conduct an autopsy.

As per the preliminary investigation, the police had revealed that Kanimozhi was under depression about her performance in the exam and had told her parents that she can't clear the exam. Kanimozhi was a bright student in her school as she had scored 462 marks out of 500 in Class 10 and 562 marks out of 600 in Class 12. Her demise has become the third NEET-related suicide recorded by the Ariyalur district, after the death of Vignesh in 2020, and Anitha in 2017, who was the first medical aspirant to commit suicide due to NEET.

Kanimozhi's death had also become the second suicide due to NEET in Tamil Nadu in less than three days. On September 11, a day ahead of the NEET exam, 20-year-old medical aspirant Dhanush had committed suicide over the fear of failing the exam. A native of Salem, Dhanush had written NEET two times and he didn't clear the exam due to which he was preparing to appear for the third time on Sunday.

However, over the fear of failing the exam for the third time, Dhanush had committed suicide by leaving behind the excellent mark that he scored in the Class 12 exams. Kanimozhi's suicide has happened on the same day when the government adopted a bill to ban NEET. On Monday, the Tamil Nadu Assembly has passed the Tamil Nadu Admission to Undergraduate Medical Degree Courses Bill to repeal NEET. The bill has been sent for the Governor and following his consent, it will be forwarded to the President of India.

The Tamil Nadu government has said that the bill aims to provide admission to undergraduate medical courses not through NEET, but on the basis of the marks obtained in the qualifying examination. This system will be done with the view of ensuring social justice, uphold equality and equal opportunity, protect all vulnerable student communities from being discriminated against. The government added that the bill will also enable bringing such students to the mainstream of medical and dental education.
