Shock and relief: How TN BJP Annamalai's nomination put him in tension?

Former IPS Officer Annamalai had gone through trouble in getting his nomination to the card of the eligible list of candidates for the upcoming assembly polls in Tamil Nadu. Annamalai had retired from civil services and joined the Central ruling BJP party. Upon joining the BJP in Tamil Nadu, the party had named him as the vice-president of the party's unit in the state. 

He has become one of the significant faces of the party in the state and emerged as a key leader in the growth of the party. Tamil Nadu is gearing up for the elections, the BJP is looking for a political breakthrough in the state and it is going to contest the polls in the ADMK alliance where the state ruling party had offered 20 seats for BJP. Recently, the Central ruling party had announced the candidates for the polls in which it had offered the ticket for senior leaders and celebrities. 

Annamalai had also got a ticket to contest in the Aravakurichi constituency in the Karur district and he had filed his nomination papers to contest in the polls. However, the former IPS officer had gone through shock and relief in getting his nomination eligible for the polls. The Election Commission had begun the process of examining the nomination papers of the candidates from Saturday as the process of filing the nomination had ended on Friday.

On Saturday, as part of examining the nomination, the officials had reviewed the nomination papers of Annamalai during the opposition demanded the officials not to accept Annamalai's nomination as he had failed to disclose the pending cases against him. Based on the complaint from the opposition, the election officials had put Annamalai's nomination on hold, which shocked the BJP leader. 

However, hours after putting his nomination on hold, the election officials had finally accepted the nomination of Annamalai. Bringing him relief, Annamalai has got a place in the ballots to contest in Aravakurichi. The upcoming legislative election will be the first assembly polls for Annamalai. According to reports, the officials had accepted his nomination after carefully reviewing his nomination. 

The episode of sudden shock over his nomination had put Annamalai in tension as he had faced uncertainty in becoming an eligible candidate for the polls. On Saturday, the first day of reviewing the nominations, the nominations of over 800 candidates have been accepted. According to the Election Commission, over 6,500 nominations have been filed across the state by the candidates of the political parties and independents. 

On Saturday, the Election Commission had accepted the nominations of Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami (Edappadi), Deputy Chief Minister Panneerselvam (Bodinayakanur), DMK President MK Stalin, AMMK's General Secretary TTV Dhinakaran (Kovilpatti), and Kamal Haasan (Coimbatore South).   • Issue of Notification - March 12th, 2021.
  • Last date of nomination - March 19th, 2021.
  • Last date of scrutiny - March 20th, 2021.
  • Last date for withdrawing nomination - March 22nd, 2021
  • Date of Election - April 6th, 2021. 
  • Date of counting - May 2nd, 2021, during which the winner will be declared.
