Amidst the series of job cuts announced by the blue-chip companies that have been predicted to pour major impact for the IT professionals in Chennai, the Tamil Nadu state Labor Commission had called on the representatives of the tech companies in Chennai and directed to disclose the details of the employee headcount changes during the recent years.
It has been reported that the top labor commission authorities tabled the meet with the representatives of about 20 tech companies and with the team of officials from NASSCOM trade association on Monday where the authorities largely discussed the announcement of layoffs and sought the data from the tech companies on the layoffs it had carried out in previous years.
Top IT companies like Cognizant - which announced the job cuts of over 10,000 jobs, TCS, HCL, Tech Mahindra, Wipro, Capgemini, and IBM were among the companies which had sent its representatives to attend the scheduled meeting with the state government.
However, the IT employees union (UNITE), which was one among the employees' unions that tabled the petition to the state labor commission this month, had accused the commission on reportedly keeping the unions out of the meeting by holding a closed-door session with the tech companies and demanded the state labor commissioner to host a tripartite meeting with the employees' union. The General Secretary of UNITE has said that the labor commission had dismissed the request of the IT unions to attend the meeting with the tech representatives on Monday despite the complaint which was raised by the employees' unions.
Describing the closed-door meeting, the state labor commissioner Nandagopal had stated that though the multiple employees' unions had submitted their petitions on the layoffs, they must file a legal complaint under the Industrial Disputes Act to initiate official action. He added that the meeting with the representatives of IT companies was held with the view of obtaining more data on the massive layoffs.
Recently, the major tech companies like Cognizant, Infosys, HCL, and Capgemini have proposed for the job cuts and staff attrition with the aim of unleashing cost-cutting plans.
