The state of Tamil Nadu has been seemingly underlining itself for being one of the leading states in honor killings in India for the past few years and pouring the fuel on the fire is the recent incident happened in Nagapattinam district of the state where the mother killed her daughter on Tuesday for her alleged relationship with the Dalit youth that had added to the prevailing plight.
The reports say that after getting revealed of her daughter's relation with the Dalit youth, the angered mother had reportedly set the girl on fire before victimizing herself to the fire. After having been rushed to the hospital, the daughter was declared dead while her mother, who torched the fire, is still undergoing the treatments.
The police authorities who are currently investigating the case have identified the daughter as the 11th-grade student who belongs to a scheduled caste. Her mother Uma Maheswari is a daily wage worker while her father works as a carpenter. The authorities had cited that the girl was in the relationship with a Dalit youth in her village of Vazhmangalam where her relationship had deepened that led her to leave the house with the boy but her parents had brought back to the house and on Tuesday, it has been reported that the girl and her mother went through heated arguments where, by citing that she will be turning 18 later this month, she claimed that no one can stop her from leaving the house.
The authorities had stated that the arguments had incited her mother to get angry after which she allegedly poured kerosene on the girl and herself before torching the fire on the fuel. They added that the girl has died while her mother remains critical and less likely that she would survive. The reports say that the case has been booked against the mother in Thittacheri police station under Section 302 for murder following which the police had started further investigations where they would be interrogating the girl's father to hunt his involvement.
