Senior DMK Minister KN Nehru has already been in a centre of public outcry for his conducts against the DMK functionaries and now, he has been caught up with fresh controversy over his conversation with the Erode East bypoll's Congress candidate EVKS Elangovan about distributing money for the voters in the constituency in the bypoll.
In a video that was shared by Tamil Nadu BJP President Annamalai, KN Nehru was seen speaking with Elangovan on the stage in the party's event in Erode, amidst the campaign trail of the DMK and Congress. While DMK Ministers Muthusamy and EV Velu were addressing the event, the conversation, that happened between KN Nehru and Elangovan in the background, had elements about distributing money to the voters.
Both of them were seated close to the microphone and focusing on their talk, Annamalai has released a video in which their conversations were subtitled. By alleging that Nehru and Elangovan were discussing 'cash for votes' in the video, Annamalai has accused DMK of facing the election with the hope on money and that the party thinks anything can be bought with money.
Taking to Twitter, Annamalai wrote, "DMK faces the election pinning their hopes on money power & they presume that anything could be bought with money! If in doubt, check this out!." In the video, DMK Minister KN Nehru can be heard talking about providing cash to the voters and that it should be completed between January 30 and February 1.
In the purported video, the DMK Minister can further be heard mentioning a place called 'Platinum Mahal'. KN Nehru says, "Let's see if Mahesh (Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi) is coming with us or we ourselves will do it. We ourselves will give or at least I will give it off. Even (minister) Senthil Balaji will give." For the BJP, which is yet to announce its stand on the Erode East bypoll, this video has certainly become a talking point to attack the DMK in the bypoll.
On the other hand, for KN Nehru, who has already been slammed for his unruly behaviour with the party functionaries, the video shared by Annamalai has been troubling him. Annamalai has also taken this video to the attention of the Tamil Nadu Election Commission and the Election Commission of India. Though the DMK has a good advantage in the bypoll race, Nehru's alleged conversation about the cash for votes has marred the ruling party's campaign run.
Erode East bypoll has been scheduled to be held on February 27 and the results will be declared on March 2. The bypoll was necessitated by the shocking demise of Congress MLA Thirumahan Everaa, who died on January 4 at the age of 46 due to heart attack. In the bypoll, the DMK has awarded its ally, the Congress, to contest again and Thirumahan's father and former Union Minister EVKS Elangovan has now been declared as the Congress candidate and he will be filing the nomination papers on February 3.
