Radhakrishnan, L Ganesan, Vanathi Srinivasan, and about 600 party cadres held protests near the Gandhi statue in Marina beach, in the middle of the New Year celebrations, with the view of demanding the police to arrest Nellai Kannan for his controversial remarks against the Prime Minister and Home Minister and the Citizenship Amendment Act.

On Sunday, while addressing at an event organized by the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) in Tirunelveli district, Tamil Nadu, Nellai Kannan spurred fresh allegations against the Central and the state governments. In his address, he publicly said that Narendra Modi is the Prime Minister but Amit Shah is his brain and if Amit Shah is finished then Modi will be finished too and by pointing out the leaders and the Muslim dignitaries on the dais, Kannan said that 'none of you are doing it'.
After his statement gone viral over the social media, the Tamil Nadu unit of BJP has filed an official complaint to initiate actions against Nellai Kannan and along with the political body, several BJP leaders had filed complaints against Kannan following which the police department has booked him under the grounds of Section 504 -provoking with intention, Section 505 (1) -committing an offense against the state or the public tranquility and Section 505 (2) - committing offense in religious ceremony.

BJP's state spokesperson Narayanan Thirupathy is one among the leaders to submit his complaint and he cited that Nellai Kannan had abused the political leaders and stated that Kannan has expressed his shock as to why Muslims have not yet killed the Prime Minister and Home Minister. By requesting the authorities to detain Nellai Kannan, Thirupathy said that the Tamil orator's speech had incited the enmity between the religious groups.
