Mani Ratnam's magnum opus Ponniyin Selvan has been showering rain of records to the world of cinema with back-to-back milestones as the historical periodic drama is running successfully for weeks now and scripting a new trend across and beyond the borders.
In line with the previous records, Ponniyin Selvan has now set a WOW milestone as it has become the first Tamil cinema to gross 200 crores from the state alone in the history of Kollywood. According to reports, with a box office estimate of Rs 200 crores from Tamil Nadu, the movie has achieved the milestone when it is still counting its record worldwide.
Even the recent blockbuster 'Vikram', directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, had grossed Rs 100 crores in Tamil Nadu. The iconic Ponniyin Selvan is directed by Mani Ratnam and it has come in two parts. The first part got released on September 30 while the second and final part will be released during Summer 2023.
The historical drama features Vikram, Aishwarya Rai, Trisha, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Sarathkumar, Parthiban, Jayaram, Prabhu, and Vikram Prabhu in important roles. The movie grossed Rs 200 crores in Tamil Nadu 17 days after its release. According to a popular film tracker, Ponniyin Selvan has earned over Rs 460 crores at the worldwide box office.
On Wednesday - October 19, Lyca Productions, which bankrolled Ponniyin Selvan, shared that the movie has grossed over Rs 450 crores worldwide. Taking to Twitter, the production house wrote, "History in the making. #PS1 hits a staggering 450+ crores at the box office. Thank you for all the love and support." Interestingly, Ponniyin Selvan 1 has broken yet another enormous record as it has surpassed Ayan Mukerji's 'Brahmastra Part 1 - Shiva' to rank third among the Indian movies worldwide in box office revenue for 2022.
In comparison to Brahmastra, which made more than 430 crores in total worldwide over its lifetime, PS1 has made Rs 457 crores in the 20 days since its release. PS1 is a historical drama film that tells the tale of the Chola dynasty. A. R. Rahman composed the musical score, and Ravi Varman, A. Sreekar Prasad, and Thota Tharani handled the cinematography, editing, and production design. The movie broke several records at the box office, earning over 450 crores, becoming the highest-grossing Tamil movie of 2022, the fourth-highest Tamil movie of all time, and the 16th-highest Indian movie of all time.
