Showcasing the reality of how the major corporate donors are raining money on the BJP, a latest report has revealed that the party has bagged 94% of the corporate donations in Gujarat in the last five years. While there are four political parties on the list, BJP had outnumbered the rest of the parties by amassing more donation and the revelation has come at a high time when Gujarat is heading for the assembly polls.
According to the report released by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), the BJP has received Rs 163.54 crore, which is nearly 94% of the total corporate donations, in the last five years - FY (Financial Year) 2016 to FY 2021. The total corporate donations declared by political parties from Gujarat between 2016-17 to 2020-21 stood at Rs 174.06 crore from 1,571 donors.
Out of Rs 174.06 crore donations, BJP alone has received Rs 163.54 crore which is 94% of total contributions. The report, which was released on Sunday, has mentioned four parties - BJP, Congress, Aam Aadmi Party, and Samyukt Kisan Morcha. Congress has received Rs 10.46 crore corporation donations during the same period from 47 donors.
The report has further revealed that the political parties had received the highest corporate donations worth Rs 48.83 crore from 532 donors in 2018-19, ahead of the Lok Sabha polls. It has highlighted that between March 2018 and October 2022, a total of 595 electoral bonds worth Rs 343 crore were purchased from the State Bank of India's branch in Gandhinagar.
The ADR's report has shown that the total income declared by the national and regional parties whose annual reports were available on the Election Commission's website is Rs 16,071.60 crore and as much as Rs 12,842.28 crore or 79.91 per cent of the total income was declared by eight national parties, while the remaining Rs 3,229.32 crore was declared by regional parties.
"Of the total corporate donations (Rs 4014.58 crore) received by political parties in the five-year period, 4.34 per cent or Rs 174.06 crore worth of corporate donations came from Gujarat. This is based on the data analyzed from the contribution reports submitted by the political parties to the Election Commission", the report added. Gujarat is heading for the polls on December 1 and 5 for its 182 seats. The votes will be counted and the results will be declared on December 8.
