The race for DMK's top posts comes to end after two senior leaders would be elected unopposed!

The race for the powerful posts in the DMK party has come to end on Thursday after, as speculated, the two senior leaders would be getting elected unopposed for the top posts at the party's general council meeting that will be held on September 9.

The Tamil Nadu Opposition party will be convening the general council meeting virtually for the first time in the party's history and the meeting, which was earlier scheduled in March, got deferred in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak and restrictions and the next week's meeting has been packed with some of the important agendas of the party including the election of party's general secretary and treasurer and discussing the upcoming assembly session and elections.

While DMK's senior leader S Duraimurugan has been strongly expected to contest for the post of the General Secretary, senior leaders like TR Baalu, Jagathratchagan, A Raja, and EV Velu were speculated to contest for the post of Treasurer. The election has come after the demise of party's longtime General Secretary K Anbazhagan, who died on March 7, 2020.

Duraimurugan, who is the current treasurer of the party, has been the top contender for the post of General Secretary to be the successor of the demised leader. Following the demise of Anbazhagan, Duraimurugan tendered his resignation from the post of treasurer in March 2020 to contest for the post of General Secretary. However, DMK President MK Stalin has said that his resignation will be kept on hold till the general council meeting.

As the meeting has now scheduled on September 9, Duraimurugan would be contested for the General Secretary post and his post of Treasurer will become vacant for which it was speculated that there would be a tight race in the party. However, the party had seen no race after Duraimurugan and TR Baalu were the only leaders who filed their nominations for the posts of General Secretary and Treasurer respectively.

The development has come after some of the senior leaders EV Velu, A Raja, and Jagathratchagan had stayed off the track of the race letting TR Baalu as the only contender for the post of Treasurer. The last date for filing the nominations for the posts had ended on Thursday and both leaders had filed their nominations and submitted the papers to the party's Organizing Secretary RS Bharathi at the DMK headquarters in Chennai.

Following the nominations, it is said that both the leaders will be elected unopposed for the posts during the general council meeting as there are no other nominations made. The general council meeting will be chaired by MK Stalin and will be virtually attended by the members of the council across the state during which they would also discuss the 2021 state legislative elections and to take on the ruling government during the upcoming legislative session.
