The President of India Ram Nath Kovind had officially consented the recommendation of Supreme court collegium to name the current Chief Justice of Patna High court Amreshwar Pratap Sahi as the new Chief Justice of Madras High court.
The reports say that the President has advised the new Chief Justice of Madras High court to assume his office on or before November 13th, 2019 to replace the exited Chief Justice Tahilramani, who resigned last month over expressing her concern on being transferred to relatively smaller high court of Meghalaya after which Justice Vineet Kothari has been named as Acting Chief Justice of the high court. After taking charge of Chief Justice of Madras High court, Amreshwar Pratap Sahi will demit his office on December 31st 2020 which pictures that he will be holding the office for the next one year.
The Madras High court had hosted the grounds of controversies along with the queue of pending cases after the Supreme court collegium had issued directives to transfer the then Chief Justice Tahilramani to Meghalaya High court by citing the better judicial administration. After having been transferred to Meghalaya High court, which is smaller in the volume and numbers of judges while compared to Madras High court, she had written to the collegium to reconsider its decision on the recommendations. But however, the collegium had eventually rejected her request and advised her to assume the office of Chief Justice of Meghalaya High court.
Amidst the transfer, Tahilramani had tendered her resignation from one of the top judicial posts on September 6th where she had sent her resignation to the President by copying to the Chief Justice of India and about two weeks later, her resignation was accepted by the President after which Justice Vineet Kothari has been named as the Acting Chief Justice of Madras High court until replaced with Chief Justice.
Justice Amreshwar Pratap Sahi has been holding the office of Chief Justice of Patna High court since November 17th 2018 before which he was in Allahabad high court as one of its judges from 24th September 2004 to 16th November 2018.
