Popular Chennai doctor Subbiah's murder: Seven, including two lawyers, get death penalty!

The Additional sessions court in Chennai has on Wednesday pronounced the final verdict in the murder of Chennai based doctor Subbiah. The verdict has come seven years after the incident and the judicial body has awarded the death penalty to seven of the ten accused while two accused has got incarceration to double life terms. Of those seven who would be stepping on the gallows, two were lawyers. Following the verdict, Dr Subbiah's wife Shanthi Subbiah has said that she strongly believes in the judiciary system. 

Subbiah, a Chennai-based popular neurologist, was brutally attacked and killed in the month of September 2013.  A mob has attacked him with weapons when he came out of Billroth Hospitals in Raja Annamalaipuram on September 14, 2013. After sustaining severe injuries, he was admitted to the hospital. However, he had succumbed to the injuries on September 23. The police had filed a case and launched the probe into his death due to brutal attacking. 

It was reported that Subbiah was murdered due to a family dispute and during the course of the investigation, the police had arrested Dr Jamesh Sathish Kumar, school teacher Ponnusamy, his wife Mary Pushpam, and sons P Basil - lawyer, Boris, and Yesurajan. The police had also arrested hooligans Murugan, Selva Prakash, and Iyyappan. The prime accused in the case - advocate Williams was at large for several years and he had surrendered in August 2018. The police had filed a case against all ten of them and taken them under judicial custody. 

The trial was going on at the Chennai Court and it was announced that Additional sessions Judge IS Alli will pronounce the final verdict on Wednesday. Being one of the notable cases in Tamil Nadu, the announcement has drawn major attention from across and beyond the state. On Wednesday, Justice Alli has pronounced the verdict and declared nine of the ten accused as guilty for the offences charged against them. Justice Alli has sentenced seven of the nine accused to the death penalty, two others were sentenced to double life terms, while another accused, who had later turned an approver for prosecution, has been released without any punishment. 

Two lawyers were among the seven who were awarded capital punishment. The court has sentenced Ponnusamy, Williams and Basil (both were advocates), Boris, James Sathish Kumar, Murugan, and Selva Prakash to double capital punishment for offences under sections 302 and 120B of the IPC. The other two accused - Mary Pushpam and Yesurajan have been sentenced to double life terms while Ayyanpan, who was a hooligan-turned-approver, was released without any punishment. 

After the verdict, deceased Dr Subbiah's wife Shanthi Subbaiah has said that the verdict came after 2,872 days of her husband's death and she strongly believes in the judiciary system. By citing that she always wanted to be a homemaker, the circumstances had pushed her to pursue the challenge. She has been running a silk saree sales showroom in Nandanam along with her sister and said that the pain that she had undergone cannot be compensated by anyone and no one should face such a situation.
