Mani Ratnam’s magnum opus ‘Ponniyin Selvan 2’ has created history by becoming the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2023. The film, which is the second part of the adaptation of Kalki Krishnamurthy’s 1955 novel of the same name, has reportedly made more than Rs 350 crore at the global box office in just 14 days. 

The film’s makers announced this feat by taking us to Twitter on Friday, sharing a poster that read, "Highest grossing Tamil film of the year." ‘Ponniyin Selvan 2’ is a grand spectacle that showcases the glory and intrigue of the Chola kingdom in medieval India. The film boasts of an ensemble cast that includes Aishwarya Rai, Vikram, Jayam Ravi, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi and Karthi in pivotal roles.

Critics and moviegoers alike have praised the film's stunning visuals, alluring performances, and thrilling story. The film has received high marks for featuring strong, independent women who pursue their dreams. The film has been dominating the box office since its release on April 28, breaking several records along the way. The film has crossed the Rs 100 crore mark and the Rs 150 crore mark in Tamil Nadu and at the domestic box office respectively.

The film has also performed exceptionally well in overseas markets, inching close to $40 million. The film has surpassed the collections of other Tamil films released this year such as Varisu, Thunivu, Pathu Thala, Dada and Viduthalai.

‘Ponniyin Selvan 2’ is a rare cinematic achievement that has enthralled and entertained millions of viewers across the world.
