The critically acclaimed hit, Ponniyin Selvan 1 helmed by the maverick filmmaker Mani Ratnam which starred the leading actors Vikram, Karthi, and Jayam Ravi has raked in a staggering box office collection around the world. After Mani Ratnam announced his film's cast of iconic stars, filmgoers had no doubt it would be a phenomenal and historical win.

According to the reports, it broke the box office records and established itself as one of the most financially successful Tamil films of all time. The periodic drama hit the theatres on September 30 and then got released on OTT on November 4, but it has been a runaway success with audiences ever since, becoming Kollywood's second highest-grossing film of all time, behind only Rajinikanth's "2.0," which got released in 2018. 

Ponniyin Selvan is based on Kalki's original page-turner novel 'Ponniyin Selvan', which was first published in 1955. The film has been successful enough to surpass Lokesh Kanagaraj's "Vikram," which was released earlier this year in June and starred Kamal Haasan, which garnered around 420 crores. According to reports, "Ponniyin Selvan 1" had the best performance, earning $21 million more than "2.0" in overseas, and its total collection is only about Rs 22 crore short of '2.0' overall.

Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, and Sobhitha Dhulipala played the female leads. Jayaram, Prakash Raj, Parthiban, and Sarathkumar played supporting roles in the film. AR Rahman composed the score and music for the film. The movie's sequel will come out on April 28, 2023. This epic historical film ended up becoming the most highly sound Tamil film of 2022, the fourth most successful Tamil film of all time, and the 18th most highest grossing Indian film of all time.
