Political dispute between brothers: Will DMK open its doors for MK Alagiri?

MK Alagiri, the son of DMK patriarch Karunanidhi and a former Union Minister, has been occupying political headlines since being surfaced with the speculations that he is mulling to launch a new political party and allying with the BJP ahead of the state assembly polls, which the political observers say, was his drive to threaten the DMK to re-induct him into the party.

Alagiri was expelled from the party in 2014 by then party President Karunanidhi after the emergence of a dispute between the brothers Alagiri and Stalin over taking the leadership of the party after their father. With Stalin becoming the party president after the demise of Karunanidhi, Alagiri was sidelined from the active politics by the party leaders and he was unspoken for the past five years, amid the requests from his followers to start his politics against Stalin.

Recently, at a high time when Tamil Nadu is just months away from the legislative elections in which Stalin hopes to take the reign from the ruling ADMK, MK Alagiri was surfaced with speculations that he is considering to launch a political party and in talks with the BJP to join the Central ruling party. There were reports highlighting Alagiri's political resurgence which shocked the DMK and its president Stalin.

The political observers close to the developments said that Alagiri's impending political moves could trouble for Stalin as the rebelling leader still enjoys a stronghold in Madurai and other southern districts of the state, which Stalin thinks of sweeping them to his column during the assembly polls. Alagiri's move towards getting into active politics and rivaling DMK could have been taken to put his bid apparently to DMK to re-induct him into the party failing which he would collapse DMK's stronghold.

There were speculations that Alagiri could start the party before the assembly polls and could name it as Kalaignar DMK (KDMK) and he could even meet Home Minister Amit Shah when the latter visited Tamil Nadu to show his support for the BJP. However, amid such speculations, Alagiri had asserted that he was not in the process of launching a new political party and denied the reports claiming that he has been in talks with the BJP.

Days after his assertion, one of Alagiri's close supporters KP Ramalingam had officially joined BJP and Ramalingam revealed that he would ask Alagiri to join the national party, which further stirred speculations around Alagiri. Amid such developments, DMK has seemingly not cared about Alagiri resurgence and Stalin is tightly withstanding in his decision of not re-inducting his elder brother into the party.

According to reports, DMK had convened a high-level meeting on Monday and it was expected that the party would discuss about Alagiri's recent moves and his bid to rejoin the party. However, Alagiri was not a point of discussion at Monday's meeting and the party had instead focused on discussing about the election campaign for the upcoming polls. The DMK meeting had reviewed the preparedness of the party to face the election and Stalin's son Udhayanidhi Stalin, who is the head of DMK Youth Wing, has been picked to start the election campaign in the state.

The meeting has convened at a high time when Alagiri's supporters had hoped that the expelled leader would be re-inducted into the party and would be offered with a key post. However, the DMK is still yet to open the doors for Alagiri and his faction. The political observers say Stalin and his family is completely against Alagiri's resurgence and his entry into the party when the state is going to face the elections soon.
