In his address, Modi called the students to speak to him openly without the filter. He insisted the students should have the technology under their control and ensure that the technology won't waste the time. By quoting how the scientists of ISRO conquered the failure after their Chandrayaan lunar mission had witnessed a setback, Modi stated that the students shouldn't let demotivation overrule and defeat them.

He cited that scoring good marks in exams is not everything and added that the students have to come out of the mindset that exams are everything. Modi called on the students to participate in the extracurricular activities apart from their academics and underlined that the students are filled with energy and dreams.

Narendra Modi has indicated the importance of the decade and stated that the students who are in X and XII grades would play a strong and vital role in shaping the coming decade and cited that this new year and the new decade are important for the students and the entire country. Earlier before attending the event, Modi took his Twitter and stated that "Eagerly awaiting today’s #ParikshaPeCharcha2020! It is always a delight to connect with India’s youth. Their energy and vibrancy are unparalleled. Today we would talk about numerous subjects relating to exams and even life beyond exams".

The students who participated in the event were short-listed based on the essay competition on the five subjects. The reports say that the Union HRD Ministry had conducted a short essay competition on five different subjects for the students of classes 9 to 12 following which the students were filtered to attend the event in which Modi called to talk without the filter. About 2.6 lakh entries were made by the students out of which about 1,050 students were selected to participate in the event.
