Days after President Ram Nath Kovind has consented the recommendation of the Supreme court collegium in naming Amreshwar Pratap Sahi as new Chief Justice of Madras High court, he has been sworn in as the Chief Justice of Madras High court by the Governor of Tamil Nadu Banwarilal Purohit in the swearing-in ceremony hosted by Raj Bhavan, the official residence of the Governor in Chennai today.
By having been assumed the highest office of the state's top judicial body, Justice Sahi would be replacing the acting Chief Justice Vineet Kothari who took his interim post in September after the then Chief Justice Tahilramani had departed from the office of Chief Justice by citing the concern of getting transferred to relatively smaller high court of Meghalaya.
She was recommended to take the role of Chief Justice of Meghalaya High court after finishing her first-year term in Madras High court but by refusing to assent the transfer, she reportedly wrote to the Chief Justice of India and the Supreme court collegium to consider the transfer. By denying her request, the collegium had directed her to assume office at Meghalaya high court after which she had tendered her resignation to the President and the Chief Justice. After accepting her resignation, the collegium has named Vineet Kothari as acting Chief Justice who will now be replaced by full-time Chief Justice Amreshwar Pratap Sahi.
Before assuming charge at Madras High court, Amreshwar Pratap Sahi was the Chief Justice of Patna High court in Bihar and by sworn in as the new Chief Justice of Madras High court, he becomes 49th Chief Justice of Tamil Nadu's top court. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami, the speaker of Legislative assembly and the state's cabinet ministers were present during the swearing-in ceremony and Chief Justice Sahi would be holding the office till December 31st, 2020.
