One of India's top sport stars and Badminton champion Saina Nehwal has joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday ahead of Delhi's Legislative Election and she has become one of the notable athletes in the country to get inducted on the political field and by having a huge fan base among women, BJP hopes that it was significant acquisition to the party.
After meeting BJP's National President JP Nadda at the party's headquarters in Delhi, the party's general secretary Arun Singh made the official announcement about the induction and Saina joined the party leaders and addressed the reporters for the first time after shuttling her political innings. While addressing the reporters, she said that "I have won medals for the country. I'm very hardworking and I love hardworking persons. I can see Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been doing so much for the country" and she stated that she wants to do something for the country with him.
Although the party is yet to ratify what role she would be awarded at the party, the reports say that her BJP tag would have a significant impact among the people like most of the former sportsmen who had turned as politician and it has been reported that she would likely hit the campaign grounds in Delhi campaigning for the BJP candidates in Delhi elections. The Central ruling party is strongly eyeing to rope in Delhi under its rule as the power centric states have been bidding farewell for BJP's rule despite winning 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
Saina Nehwal, a 29-year-old native of Haryana, holds a brand value and she has been conferred with national awards including Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna and Arjuna award and in 2016, she was honored with the Padma Bhushan. She bags important records with her from the Badminton career. She has won over 24 international titles and she had won a bronze medal in the 2012 London Olympics. She was world number two in 2009 and she was elevated to the first spot in 2015.
The Central ruling party has been witnessing the back to back sport stars who have been joining the BJP last year. Indian Cricketer Gautam Gambhir was the notable acquisition as he joined the party last year and he contested in 2019 elections and became MP from Delhi. During the Haryana assembly elections last year, the BJP had webbed wrestlers Sushil Kumar and Babita Phogat and former Indian Hockey team captain Sandeep Singh. Along with Saina Nehwal, her older sister Abu Chandranshu Nehwal has also joined the BJP.
