While the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) have been spurring the agitation across the country, the BJP has come up with yet another dispute of rolling out the National Population Register (NPR) and despite the protestors and critics say that the NRC is the part of NPR that would defy the minorities and the right to privacy where the NPR makes the details of Passport, Aadhar, Driving license numbers and other details mandatory, the BJP ruling Central government has reserved a budget of Rs 3,941 crore for NPR while Rs 8,500 crore have been agreed to spent for 2021 census.
By protesting against the NPR, the critics claimed that Aadhaar can serve a strong role in the population census and cited that the Central government is aiming to misuse the personal data of a citizen to target the votes.
While addressing ANI, political strategist and Chief of Indian Political Action Committee Prashant Kishor said that the National Register of Citizens (NRC) is a subset of National Population Register (NPR) and stated that there is no need to prove the link between NRC and NPR as the prevailing documents speak for themselves which say that the NPR is the first step of NRC.
He added that the debate is linked to the Citizenship Amendment Bill of 2003 during which, it was defined that after NPR, the government can implement NRC that reveals that NRC is a subset of NPR. The reports say that the NPR would be commencing from April 2020 and run till September and it will prepare a register of usual residents of the country at the village, district, state, and national level under the provisions of the Citizenship Act 1955 and it would acquire the demographic and biometric particulars from all usual residents of India.
