Amid the criticisms and controversies that surfaced over the recently approved National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami has said that there is no place for the new policy in the state as it carries the implementation of the three-language formula, which goes against the interest of the state.
Tamil Nadu has strongly been voicing against the NEP since it was drafted and proposed. Various stakeholders including the opposition parties and experts had criticized the policy which rolls out the three-language formula through which, the parties alleged that the Center attempts to impose Hindi on the students by making the formula mandatory.
Last Wednesday, Modi led Union Cabinet has approved the NEP 2020 following which the Tamil Nadu Opposition parties had demanded the state ruling ADMK party to adopt the resolution against the NEP 2020 which goes against the constitution and interests of students by making the three-language formula mandatory and the parties also urged to convene all-party meet to oppose the implementation of NEP 2020.
Amid the developments, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister has convened a high-level meeting on Monday which also attended by Chief Secretary Shanmugam, Deputy Chief Minister Panneerselvam, and the state ministers during which they discussed about the recommendations and adoptions of the NEP 2020.
Following the discussions, Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami has voiced against the NEP 2020 and said that there is no place for the three-language formula in Tamil Nadu and the status quo (two-language system) will continue in the state. By citing that it saddens and painful to know that the NEP has the three-language formula, the Chief Minister pressed that the state won't permit such implementation.
I request Prime Minister to pay heed to the unanimous demand of the people of Tamil Nadu to reconsider the three language policy and allow states to make a decision as per their own policy: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 https://t.co/y4jko9yGsN

The Chief Minister requested the Central government to re-consider the three-language policy in the view of the sentiments and interests of the people of Tamil Nadu. He further asserted that the government will take swift action against the issues that affect the Tamil people and the Tamil language. According to the reports, Tamil Nadu is one of the early states that responded to the NEP 2020.
Last week, the opposition parties demanded the Center to withdraw the NEP 2020 and the leaders had voiced against the three-language formula and accused the Center of approving the policy without tabling it before the Parliament. DMK leader Kanimozhi has, on Monday, said that the NEP 2020 would be suppressing the future of the students.
Following the statement from the Chief Minister that voiced against the NEP 2020, the state opposition leaders are calling the state government to adopt the resolution against the educational policy while the state BJP leaders have been claiming that the NEP won't impose any language on the students.
The NEP says that of the three languages, two must be Indian languages and English won't be considered in the ambit and the NEP also says that the freedom of choosing the two Indian languages should be left to the states, regions, or students. The policy further says that the students can be taught either in their mother tongue, regional language, or local language as the medium of instruction at least till class 5.
