The district court in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu has, on Thursday, awarded Nellai Kannan with judicial custody till 13th January 2020 over his controversial and provocative statements against the Prime Minister and the Home Minister. The judgment has come days after Tamil orator and writer Kannan has spurred the controversies while addressing an event in Tirunelveli last Sunday.
On Sunday, while addressing at an event organized by the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) in Tirunelveli district, Tamil Nadu, Nellai Kannan fueled the allegations against the Central and the state governments. In his address, he publicly said that Narendra Modi is the Prime Minister but Amit Shah is his brain and if Amit Shah is finished then Modi will be finished too and by pointing out the leaders and the Muslim dignitaries on the dais, Kannan said that 'none of you are doing it'.
After his statement gone viral over the social media, the Tamil Nadu unit of BJP has filed an official complaint to initiate actions against Nellai Kannan and along with the political body, several BJP leaders had filed complaints against Kannan following which the police department has booked him under the grounds of Section 504 -provoking with intention, Section 505 (1) -committing an offense against the state or the public tranquility and Section 505 (2) - committing offense in religious ceremony.
With accord to the FIR registered against him, the police officials had arrested Nellai Kannan on Wednesday night in Perambalur hours after the state BJP leaders had staged protests in Marina Beach, Chennai to demand the police to arrest the orator immediately for his inciting statements against the Prime Minister and Home Minister. After having been arrested, he was produced before Tirunelveli district court on Thursday where the Justice had ordered the police to take Nellai Kannan under the judicial custody till January 13th, 2020.
On the other hand, the Chennai police department has booked the senior BJP leaders and 300 others for protesting at Marina Beach. Senior leaders including H Raja, Pon Radhakrishnan, CP Radhakrishnan, and L Ganesan have been booked by the police for staging protests at Marina Beach that was banned by the Madras High Court and raising slogans to urge the police to detain Nellai Kannan.
The reports say that they have been booked under section 143- unlawful assembly, section 145- continuing the unlawful assembly despite ordered to disperse, and section 341- wrongful restraint.
