National leaders pay tribute to Pranab Mukherjee: State funeral to be held today

The state funeral for former President Pranab Mukherjee will be held on Tuesday in Delhi and the veteran politician will be laid down to rest with full military honors. The nation has been mourning the demise of the former head of state who died on Monday at the age of 84 due to cardiac arrest in the Army Research and Referral Hospital in Delhi. 

He was on August 10 tested positive for the COVID-19 viral infection and admitted to the hospital and went through the emergency surgery to remove a clot in his brain on the same day and never left the hospital since then. During his course of treatment, he was under critical state and under the support of the ventilator and he later developed a lung infection and went into the state of a deep comatose. 

On Monday, his health declined further and he attained a setback in his battle for survival, and on Monday evening, Pranab Mukherjee's son Abhijit Mukherjee shared the news of his father's demise. Since the news of his demise made headlines, national and state leaders have been remembering him, recalling his remarkable achievements in the public and political career that spanned for five decades, and paying their condolences as the nation has lost an extraordinary statesman and 'Bharat Ratna' laureate. 

 

After his demise, his mortal remains were taken to his residence at 10 Rajaji Marg and on Tuesday, national leaders like Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Health Minister Harsh Vardhan, and Chief of Defence Staff Bipin Rawat had paid floral tribute to the deceased leader at his residence. 

According to the reports, the state funeral for the former president will be held on Tuesday afternoon as he would be laid to rest with full state honors. As a protege of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, Pranab Mukherjee was one of the significant statesmen in independent India. He was a long-time leader of Congress and had kept his five decades political career busy with offering his unparalleled contribution in the nation's political and administerial spheres. 

 

Pranab Mukherjee was a seven-time parliamentarian and has held major and powerful ministries in Congress and the UPA regime. He was the 13th President of India and held the nation's highest office from 2012 to 2017 before which he was serving as India's Finance Minister. He was the immediate predecessor of incumbent Ram Nath Kovind and the latter had conferred the former with 'Bharat Ratna', the nation's highest civilian honor, in 2019.
