Narendra Modi makes history! Becomes the longest serving non-Congress PM of India

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has become the longest-serving non-Congress Prime Minister of India after he surpassed the tenure served by Former Prime Minister and BJP stalwart Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Narendra Modi has also attained the feat of becoming the fourth-longest serving Prime Minister of India after his predecessors Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, and Manmohan Singh.

Narendra Modi has achieved the feat on August 13 amid the unpleasant state of the nation with the battle against the COVID-19 outbreak. Modi, who took the oath of the Prime Minister in May 2014, continues to hold the nation's third-highest office for the six straight years through which he surpassed the tenure of his predecessor Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who served as the Prime Minister for 2,268 days in all his three terms combined.

Union Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office Jitendra Singh has taken to Twitter on Thursday and said, "Today, PM Sh @NarendraModi becomes the 4th longest serving Prime Minister in Indian history! He also becomes the longest serving Indian PM of non-Congress origin. Vajpayee ji served for 2268 days in all his terms combined. Today PM Modi has surpassed that tenure."

According to the reports, Atal Bihari Vajpayee has served as the Prime Minister of India for three terms. He was first elected as the Prime Minister in 1996 and he was in office for 13 days from May 16 to June 1. After his first tenure, Vajpayee took the oath as the Prime Minister for the second time and he served for 13 months from March 1998 to April 1999 and he occupied the office for the full five-year term as his third tenure from 1999 to 2004.

In total, Vajpayee had served 2,268 days as the Prime Minister, which was now overtaken by Narendra Modi and he has now become the longest serving non-Congress Prime Minister of India. Modi's other feat was becoming the fourth longest serving Prime Minister. Ahead of him were his predecessors Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, and Manmohan Singh and all these three Prime Ministers were from the Congress Party.

Jawaharlal Nehru, who was India's first Prime Minister, assumed the office on August 15, 1947, and he held the post till May 27, 1964. In total, he has served for almost 17 years or 6,130 days. Following Nehru, his daughter Indira Gandhi assumed the office and she served as the Indian Prime Minister for almost 15 years or a total of 5,829 days. She took the office on January 24, 1966, and held the post till March 24, 1977.

She assumed the office for the second term and served for four years from January 14, 1980, to October 31, 1984, and it was when she was assassinated. She was the second longest serving Prime Minister. Following Indira Gandhi, Manmohan Singh has become the third longest serving Prime Minister from May 22, 2004, to May 26, 2014. He served for ten days- a total of 3,656 days.

Following these three Congress Prime Ministers, Narendra Modi has become the fourth longest-serving Prime Minister after he has served six years with having four more years left in his current term, which has been filled with dissents and resistances over the controversial policies that birthed from his government from the CAA to EIA and with rampant criticism on handling the COVID-19 pandemic.
