Amid the anticipations that the Kamal Nath's government in Madhya Pradesh would face the trust vote on Monday, his government has been awarded 10 days after the Madhya Pradesh Governor Lalji Tandon has adjourned the assembly till March 26th by citing the rapid spread of the Coronavirus.
Kamal Nath's government has been on the verge of getting ousted from the rule after then Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia has torched a revolt in the party after quitting from the Gandhis faction and joined BJP last week. After he got divorced from the party, nearly 22 MLAs, who have been supporting him, have tendered their resignations to the Governor making Kamal Nath sail against the wave that has been submerging his ship.
After running out of the majority numbers, Congress had packed its MLAs and sheltered them in Jaipur to ensure that no one switches their side to the opposite camp and on the other hand, the BJP government has been vying to form a new government under Shivraj Singh Chouhan. In the middle of the stumbling developments, Kamal Nath was levied with the burden of proving his majority in the assembly during Monday's assembly session. The MLAs who were camped in the other states had returned to the assembly ahead of the trust vote.
However, Governor Lalji Tandon, in his one-minute address, had adjourned the house till March 26th and kept the anticipations of the trust vote alive. The assembly had gone through the ruckus between the two rival factions and after the Governor adjourned the assembly, the current opposition in the assembly BJP has moved its petition to the Supreme court against the adjournment and the apex court would take up the matter on Tuesday. Governor has stated that all must follow the rules under the Indian Constitution to protect the dignity of the Madhya Pradesh.
The reports have stated that the Congress MLAs have asked the Governor to suspend the assembly due to Coronavirus and many of the ruling party's MLAs came wearing the masks. The resignations of 22 MLAs followed by Scindia's revolt had troubled the Kamal Nath's government to pedal the mechanism with the majority and these rebel MLAs were taken to Bangalore and there are expected to follow the footsteps of Scindia towards joining the BJP. Although 22 MLAs had moved their resignations, only six resignations have been accepted by the Speaker and if the rest of the resignations are accepted, Kamal Nath would lose his majority and its less likely that he could save his 15-month-old government in the state.
The Madhya Pradesh assembly is currently filled with 222 MLAs out of 230 members (two vacant and six resigned) and the government needs the support of 112 MLAs to prove the majority and if the Speaker accepts the resignation of remaining MLAs, the majority mark would stay at 104 and Congress would be having the numbers below hundred while BJP would have 107 MLAs following which the Central ruling party will form a new government. Will Kamal Nath fix his broken ship from getting submerged in 10 days?
