Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath has stepped down from the post after his government has been toppled by the rebel Congress MLAs led by then Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia. His resignation comes hours before the floor test in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly, which would less likely save his government as he has lost the majority mark in the assembly that had made Congress party lose another stronghold state from its account to its national rival BJP.
Kamal Nath's government is 15 months old and the premature expiry of the rule has been torched by Scindia, who observed close ties with the Gandhis. Along with Scindia, 22 MLAs of the assembly who backed him, had moved their resignations to the Assembly Speaker by drifting the majority numbers to run the government. Earlier, Speaker Prajapati had accepted six resignations and on Thursday, he accepted the rest of the resignations that had brought down Kamal Nath's government with minority numbers. As per the directive issued by the Supreme Court on Thursday, the floor test must be held on Friday (March 20th) around 5 pm.
However, Kamal Nath, after realizing that chances are less likely to survive, had tendered his resignation and he had met Madhya Pradesh Governor Lalji Tandon to table his resignation and Madhya Pradesh has become the second state to witness the fall of the government after Karnataka in the span of one year. Before announcing his resignation, Kamal Nath has accused BJP of nesting the plot against him.
According to the latest reports, BJP's Shivraj Singh Chouhan would soon meet the Governor and stake a claim to form a new government by outsing the Congress rule. By losing the power in India's central state, Congress would see itself diminishing from the Indian map as it remains in power only in the handful of states and this would be the major transition of power and a major boost to the BJP that had lost legislative elections in Maharashtra and Jharkhand last year. All the rebel MLAs have been camped in Bengaluru, Karnataka.
During the press conference, outgoing Chief Minister Kamal Nath said that his government has acted against mafia and BJP didn't like that and the Central ruling party has betrayed the people. By claiming that the voters gave him a five-year mandate, Kamal Nath stated that the BJP has been plotting against his government since day one.
The Governor has earlier adjourned the assembly till March 26th by citing the spread of the Coronavirus and now the assembly gathers amid the outbreak to elect the new government. Rebel Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia has tweeted that the people of Madhya Pradesh have won and the truth has conquered. With the current stage, the Congress party had lost its majority after 22 MLAs have resigned. To form a government, a party needs 104 MLAs and currently, BJP has 107 MLAs and its current strength would clear the way for the Central ruling party to form a new government comfortably.
