Exactly one day ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Chennai, the city's traffic police department has on Saturday announced the heavy traffic diversions within the city and detours as the replacement for the blocked roads. So, if you are in Chennai and planning for a weekend outing with the family or for valentine's day, you must know the following traffic diversions that will be in place from 8 am to 1 pm on Sunday.
According to a note released by the Chennai City Traffic Police, heavy vehicles and goods carriers will not be allowed inside Chennai city limits from 8 am to 1 pm and along with restricting the heavy vehicles, the traffic police department has imposed diversions in some of the key roads inside Chennai during the same time period.
The vehicles coming from Koyambedu to Chennai Central railway station will be diverted in the detour and they will be routed to reach Central railway station through Nair bridge, Pantheon roundtana, Chitra Point to reach Anna Salai. From there, they will reach the railway station. The vehicles from Royapuram towards Parrys Corner will be diverted via Ibrahim road, Mint Junction, Basin Bridge, Erukkancheri road, Ambedkar road, and Purasaiwakkam.
Vehicles moving from Anna Salai towards Royapuram will be diverted through Spencer-Benny road, Marshal road, Nair Bridge, and Doveton while vehicles coming from South Canal towards the Gandhi statue will be diverted via Kutcheri road, Luz junction, and Royapettah High road. Most of these roads are situated in the circle of downtown Chennai and it has been expected that the heavy traffic diversions may trigger disruptions.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be arriving in Chennai at around 10.30 am on Sunday and he will be given a rousing welcome by the state government and the Tamil Nadu BJP unit as his visit comes at a high time when the state is just months away from the legislative elections. The Prime Minister will be inaugurating and laying the foundation stones for several projects at an event that will be hosted by Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium on Sunday.
According to reports, the heavy traffic diversions will be imposed on Sunday with the view of ensuring that the Prime Minister's visit to the city will be smooth and seamless and these traffic diversions will also apply for the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) buses. The Prime Minister will be attending the meeting in the presence of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami and other ministers and Narendra Modi will be in Chennai for three hours.
He will land in the city at around 10.30 am following which he will board the chopper and reach the stadium and along with inaugurating the projects, the Prime Minister will also be dedicating Arjun Tank, which is a third-generation main battle tank developed by India's Defence Research and Development Organization, to the Indian Army. Narendra Modi will be departing Chennai at around 1.40 pm and he will travel to Kochi, Kerala. During his three-hour-long tour, he will not be taking part in the political party meetings and it has been expected that the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and his deputy will be chatting with the Prime Minister informally on the sidelines of the event.
