The BJP ruling state of Karnataka is all set to host the elections for the Karnataka Legislative Council and amid the political race, a Congress candidate has now turned heads by declaring that he has assets worth Rs 1700 crore. The elections for the council will be held on December 10 and Congress candidate Yousuf Sharif, who has no wider prominence, has drawn nationwide attention by becoming one of the richest candidates in the Indian elections.
54-year-old Sharif has declared his assets value in his poll affidavit and the development has been going viral. Sharif is a businessman and he is going to contest from the Bengaluru Urban local authorities' constituency. He is a native of Kolar Gold Fields and before venturing into real estate, he had done the business of selling scrap and as per his affidavit, he has declared assets belonging to him and his family worth over Rs 1,744 crore.
He also stated that he has studied till Class 5 at the local government school and he has two wives and five children - a daughter and four sons. According to PTI, he has declared Rs 97.98 crore movable and Rs 1,643.59 crore worth immovable assets in his name. While his first wife has 98.96 lakh movable assets and Rs 1.30 crore as immovable assets, his second wife has Rs 32.22 lakh worth movable assets while the rest of the assets has been in the name of his children.
Sharif had also declared that he has liabilities of Rs 67.24 crore and he has over Rs 16.87 crore in various bank accounts and Rs 17.61 crore as investments in bonds, debentures, or shares. His wives have 16.99 lakh and Rs 20,681 in their respective bank accounts and they also had investments worth Rs 1.60 lakhs and Rs 75,000. The family has vehicles worth over Rs 3 crore that include one Rolls Royce car and two Fortuners, and jewellery, and valuables worth Rs 3.85 crore.
Sharif has also revealed that he has four cases pending against him at the city's police stations, three of which he claims were based on allegations made while developing property. He has said that the Income Tax Department had conducted raids at his premises earlier and concluded the assessment by levying total dues of Rs 13.43 crore, against which he has appealed to the Income Tax Commissioner.
