The current edition of the Olympics, hosted by Tokyo, has hit its fifth day on Wednesday and India has sent one of the largest contingents to the Japanese capital with significant participation of women. The Indian contingent has 127 athletes from champions, experienced players, and young talents. In what has become a promising precedent, India has a mix of 56 women and 71 men representing the country.
Exultant to say that four Indian sailors, Nethra Kumanan and Vishnu Saravanan (laser class), KC Ganapathy and Varun Thakkar (49er class) were the first to reach Tokyo from their training bases in Europe. Comparing to the previous Olympics, India sent a huge number of shooting contingent, including Tejaswini Sawant, Apurvi Chandela, and Sanjeev Rajput, and 12 more to Olympic 2021 Tokyo this year.

Today's Olympics Bites of India:
It was cheering to see the victorious faces from the Indian Hockey team after bashing out the defending Olympic Champions Argentina 3-1. With this victory, the Indian men's hockey team has qualified for the quarterfinals in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Indian team captain Manpreet Singh after winning the match said, "Tournament is not over. We have a match against Japan tomorrow and there is so much left. We will not be thinking about how we defeated defending Olympic champions tomorrow."
"We have all played well and dominated the first three quarters but still, we missed our chances. Our defence did good and we will carry this further in the tournament and will focus on tomorrow's match", Manpreet added. With the ticket for the quarter-finals, India will be taking on Japan in their last Group A game at Oi Hockey Stadium on Friday at 3 pm Indian time.
Arvind and Arjun completed the race of LWT Men's Double Sculls Final B with the timing of 6:29.66. Spain topped the final by 6:15.45 while Poland came second with 6:16.01. This is India's highest-ever finish in the event and here's a much-expected battle- Indian boxing great Mary Kom took on Colombia's Ingrid Valencia. While Kom was a bronze medal winner in the 2012 London games, Valencia lifted the bronze medal in the 2016 Rio Olympics. Both the bronze medallists had come to the ring today at the 2020 Tokyo games for a mighty battle.
India was watching Mary Kom's match and the battle was nail-biting and intense. However, Kom has eventually lost the fight and conceded a defeat and she left the ring with a broad smile and tears when the victory of Ingrid Valencia was announced. Tokyo games will be the last Olympics for Mary Kom as she has bidded farewell from the world's biggest sporting event with a defeat and, of course, with the fact that she will forever be the legend and doyen in India's sporting history.
Meanwhile, Boxer Satish Kumar won his first match to advance to the last-eight of Tokyo Olympics 2020. He has triumphed over Ricardo Brown of Jamaica 4-1 in the Men's Super Heavyweight category to become the third Indian boxer to reach the quarterfinals of Tokyo 2020. But in the battle on the blue, swimmer Sajan Prakash has created a milestone as the only Indian swimmer to compete in two Olympic Games by finishing in 2nd place in Men's 100 Butterfly Heat 2, though India's swimming campaign has come to an end.
Sajan Prakash has failed to advance to the 100m butterfly semifinals as he has finished 46th among 55 swimmers. Other Indian swimmers at the Olympics, Maana Patel, and Srihari Nataraj have already been out of the race after delivering a disappointing show in the aquatic race. Here's a relishing piece of news - our reigning badminton world champion PV Sindhu topped to women's singles quarterfinals at the Tokyo Olympics with a straight-game triumph over Denmark's Mia Blichfeldt today.
PV Sindhu is one of the hopefuls of India and she is advancing to fulfilling the dreams of millions of people. As she has legged on to the quarterfinals, Sindhu will be taking on Yamaguchi on Friday in the quarterfinal, and entering the semifinals, Sindhu will be close to reserving a medal for India. She told media after winning today's match, "I started off well in the first game but around 15-16. I gave a couple of points because I was rushing in my defence. My coach was telling me that I was playing the wrong way and I realized that and I immediately changed my tactics and completed the first game."
Day 6 of shooting ends with Manu Bhaker finishes the qualification round at the 5th spot with a score of 292. While her compatriot Rahi Sarnobat is in 25th position with a score of 287, Serbia's Zorana Arunovic, who shot a stunning 296 to lead the pack, is in the first place. Following the victory of Deepika Kumari on Day 5, her husband and fellow archer Atanu Das has blown off two-time Olympic champion Oh Jin Hyek out of the Tokyo Olympics and storms into the pre-quarterfinals on Thursday.
Now we have the archery couple in the fray as they advance for the next levels. But after some time in the day, it was declared that his chance to play the mixed team event with his wife, Deepika Kumari was denied after he slipped four places behind Olympian debutant Pravin Jadhav, who stood 31st in the ranking round. In Golf, India's Anirban Lahiri has given a promising start on Thursday. Playing in his second Olympics, Lahiri has finished at the eighth spot in the Golf competition, much ahead of some of the golfing legends including Ireland's Rory Mcllroy. With a solid start, Lahiri has advanced to the Round 2 of Men's Individual, which will be held on Friday.
What's in the store for India on Day 7- Friday of the Olympics:
Day 7 going to start with the finals of the 25m Shooting event, which will be held on Friday at 5.30 AM. Will Manu be able to maintain her speed in the quick qualifying? Will PV Sindhu strengthen her winning momentum by dominating the field? We have to wait for tomorrow. Also, we have to confront the same opponent for two Indian teams who placed a foot on victory today, and that is Japan. PV Sindhu will next face Akane Yamaguchi of Japan, who defeated Korea's Kim Gaeun 21-17 21-18 in another pre-quarterfinals. And we have Hockey Men's Pool A against Japan at 8.15 AM.
After this, we will be witnessing the Quarterfinal 2 of Boxing with Lovlina Borgohain in the field who won the bronze medal in the 2018 AIBA Women's Boxing Championships and the successive tournament in 2019. She also secured 3rd rank in the 69 kg Welterweight category. She has to fight against Nien-Chin Chen of Chinese Taipei, who won a bronze medal at the world championships in 2016. Let's have faith in our Indian players who are going to battle tomorrow.
