After being recommended by the collegium, the Madras High court is likely to have replacement to its office of the Chief Justice. It has been reported that the collegium headed by the Chief Justice of India had recommended the transfers of top judicial chairs where the current Chief Justice of Madras High court Justice Vijaya K Tahilramani will most likely be transferred to Meghalaya High court.
While the President had given his nod to transfer her to Meghalaya, she will be replaced by the current Chief Justice of Meghalaya High court Justice A K Mittal, who will be taking charge as the new Chief Justice of Madras High court. The reports further cited that the recommendations of the transfers come after the collegium headed by the Chief Justice of India along with the Supreme court justices Bobde, Ramana, Arun Mishra and R F Nariman had unanimously rejected Tahilramani's proposal to reconsider the transfer to the Meghalaya High court, which she filed with the collegium on August 28th, 2019.
The collegium, as its rejection note, had said that considering her request is not possible as her transfer has been proposed in the interest of better administration of Justice in Meghalaya High court.
Justice Tahilramani was one of familiar faces in the current judiciary mechanism where she became a Justice in Bombay High court in June 2001 where she had served before being elevated as the Chief Justice of Madras High court in August 2018. Before holding the offices of Justice, she had served as a public prosecutor in Bombay high court since 1990 where she had appeared in many landmark cases.
On the other hand, the most likely new chair of Chief Justice of Madras High court, Justice Ajay Kumar Mittal had served as Justice in Punjab and Haryana High court in January 2004 with two decades long experiences of practicing law. He has been holding the office of Chief Justice in Meghalaya High court since May 28th, 2019.
