Is Lockdown coming back in Chennai? Here's what we can expect!

The exponential rise of COVID-19 cases in Tamil Nadu has triggered the rumors-demic over the imposition of complete lockdown and curfew in Chennai, owing to the heavy caseload. Such hearsays have found grounds amid the severity of the second wave of the novel coronavirus. Though there were speculations over the possibilities of the lockdown, the state government has denied them with the assertion that there is no chance of another complete lockdown.

Earlier this month, the Tamil Nadu government has unveiled a fresh set of restrictions to limit the movements of people to curb the human-to-human transmitting virus. Some of the restrictions include cutting down the 100% occupancy in theaters and shutting down cultural and religious events. These restrictions have come into effect on April 10 and will be in place till April 30 to curb the spread of the pandemic. As the sequel of the growing number of cases in Chennai, there were rumors that the city will be imposed with the complete lockdown.

The rumors spelled that the Tamil Nadu government may announce a full lockdown in the city like the Maharashtra government that imposed curfew-like restrictions after becoming the worst affected state in India. While the rumors of lockdown in Chennai were doing rounds on social media, the Greater Chennai Corporation had come to the picture and strongly dispelled the rumors that the lockdown will be imposed in Chennai.

Taking to Twitter, the civic body said, "Do not trust the fake news about COVID-19 lockdown that are being forwarded. Follow, the Greater Chennai Corporation's official social media handles to keep you posted about the latest updates." It has shared the message by posting a news update that claims a full lockdown will be imposed in Chennai for 12 days from April 19 to April 30. The news had been widely shared with many people got perplexed about the update.

The corporation has denied the news and appealed to the people not to believe in rumors. According to reports, Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary Rajiv Ranjan has on Friday convened a high-level meeting to discuss the COVID-19 situation in the state. It has been reported that he would be discussing the containment measures and vaccination program in the state and review the guidelines.

The reports close to the development say that the Chief Secretary would also discuss the possibilities of imposing night curfew or Sunday lockdown in the state again to curb the spread. While the complete lockdown is not in the sight, we can expect that the state will be imposed with the night curfew or lockdown on Sundays.

According to the state health department, Tamil Nadu has reported 7,987 COVID-19 cases on Thursday, the highest single-day spike recorded by the state since the outbreak. The state has recorded 9,62,935 cases so far as of Thursday of which 58,097 are active, 8,91,839 have been discharged, and 12,999 had succumbed to the viral infection.
