With having been speculated that the state of Tamil Nadu would be hosting local body elections in December after a long delay, the political parties of the state have been preparing to hit the campaign trail with the manifestos, heated accusations and allegations between each other and importantly with the race inside the party on winning the party's candidacy to contest in the polls that will elect Mayors, Chairmans for Urban municipalities and rural panchayats.
The ruling ADMK party has been witnessing a fierce race between the party men who have been looking to web the mayoral seats in the state after the party had started distributing the applications where most of the top ministers are likely to get a party ticket for their heirs and the former MPs and MLAs. Adding inline to ADMK, its allied parties have also been drafting the strategies and inviting applications for the elections that had gone through multiple delays over the past three years.
Former MPs like Jayavardhan, Balaganga and party's secretary Prabhakar are the few among the dozens of candidates hoping to fish the tickets for Mayoral seats. Jayavardhan, the son of current fisheries minister Jayakumar has been strongly looking to obtain the Chennai Mayor seat after he was defeated by the DMK's candidate Tamilachi Thangapandian in 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Along with them, the state's former ministers in the cabinet of the then Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, the party's district secretaries have been hunting the possible ways to acquire party's tickets.
A Senior Minister of the state had asserted that the party's central leadership would be finalizing the mayoral candidates amidst the demand of the allied parties and claimed that the ADMK party would contest in the Chennai Mayor race. The reports say that the state election commission has been tabling multiple meetings with the district collectors and the electoral authorities before announcing the dates for local body elections. The sources had said that the elections would be conducted on 27th and 28th December. On the other hand, the DMK party will most likely pick the incumbent secretary of the party's youth wing Udhayanidhi Stalin as the party's candidate for Chennai Mayoral race.
Earlier in the week, the state election commission had issued a notification to conduct the local body polls in December and added that the notification also carries the directives of polling hours in panchayats, town panchayats, municipalities, and corporations where the eligible voters can cast their votes from 7 am to 5 pm. The official cited that the polls would be undergoing two phases.
