While the state of Tamil Nadu has already been awarded six medical colleges by the Medical Council of India in October, the state government has now proposed to cement three more medical colleges in the coastal and tribal areas of the state.
It has been reported that the technical committee of the medical council has consented the state government to brick the medical colleges in Thiruvallur, Nagapattinam and Krishnagiri districts through which the state hopes to add about 450 MBBS seats after the proposal has been approved by the empowered committee of the medical council. An official from the state health department said that meeting with the empowered committee would be organized next week and added that if these nine colleges have established, the state can able to add 1,350 more medical seats in two years.
The cabinet committee on the economic affairs had consented the proposals of establishing about 75 government medical colleges in August and these numbers would likely be achieved in 2021-22. With the view of enhancing the medical educational corridors, the Central Government had agreed to release partial funds for the project while the rest would be funded by the respective state governments. The state of Tamil Nadu, which houses 24 medical colleges currently had proposed new colleges in six districts.
The Medical Council of India, with accord to the proposal from Tamil Nadu, had assented to set up colleges in Ramanathapuram, Nilgiris, Virudhunagar, Dindigul, Tirupur, and Namakkal. After having been approved with six new medical colleges, the state government had tabled its second proposal to set up three more medical colleges in coastal and tribal areas where the government had asserted to install medical colleges in each district.
The authorities of the state health department have said that the proposals for setting up three medical colleges were sent to the committee of the medical council based on the directive from the Chief Minister and added that the department had disclosed the papers which shows the land for these new colleges were already been allotted.
This proposal of setting up new colleges of the state has come despite the demand of the Tamil Nadu medical council in urging the Medical council of India and the state government not to establish any new medical colleges. The state's unit of the medical council has indicated that Tamil Nadu has one doctor for 709 people against the standard by the World Health Organization which keeps the probability as 1:1000 and revealed that by starting more colleges in the state, it would inevitably double the current numbers of doctors to 2.02 lakh by 2035 during when the state could be lowering down its population.
