From lifting Sunday lockdown, night curfew, to reopening the schools: Full details of TN's major relaxations!

In what has become a crucial set of relaxations amid the prediction of the peak of the Covid-19 third wave across the country, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has on Thursday- January 27 poured major relaxations to the state from February. The announcement has come four days ahead of the deadline of the current lockdown, which was imposed at the backdrop of the emergence of the third wave and the Omicron spread. 

The new set of relaxations has been unveiled on the ground of various speculations - particularly in the school reopening. The Chief Minister has held episodes of meetings and discussions with the health experts and officials before finalizing the relaxations and the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). In a huge upliftment of curbs, the state government has completely lifted the night curfews from 10 pm to 5 am and the Sunday lockdowns. Along with that, as speculated, the government has announced that the schools will be reopened for all the classes from February 1. 

The following activities are prohibited from February 1 to February 15: 

  • Social, cultural, and political events are strictly prohibited during the above mentioned period across the state. 
  • As the urban local body polls are around the corner, the SOPs issued by the Tamil Nadu State Election Commission must be strictly followed. 
  • Playschools and kindergarten will be banned, so are the exhibitions. 
  • The cultural and art events are banned. Hotels and other forms of eateries and guest houses can function with 50% of occupancy. 
  • Only 100 people will be allowed to participate in the wedding ceremonies and only 50 people can take part in the funerals. 
  • The owners of jewellery showrooms and textile shops are instructed to ensure to allow only 50% of customers. 
  • Clubs, gyms, and sporting arenas can function only with 50% of occupancy. Theatres, cinema halls, and multiplexes can function with 50% of occupancy. The same applies to salons, beauty parlours, and spas. 

The following are the relaxations that you must know: 

  • All types of schools can be reopened in Tamil Nadu for all classes from Class 1 to Class 12 from February 1. They can conduct the physical classes for the students by adhering to the SOPs. 
  • Apart from the colleges that are now functioning as Covid care centres, the rest of the colleges, universities and other forms of educational institutions are allowed to reopen on February 1. 
  • Night curfew, which was in place from 10 pm to 5 am, will be completely lifted from January 28. 
  • Sunday lockdown will also be lifted on January 30. 

According to the state health department, Tamil Nadu has reported 28,515 fresh Covid cases, 28,620 discharges, and 53 deaths on Thursday - January 27. Overall, the state has recorded 32,52,751 Covid cases so far as of Thursday of which 2,13,534 are active, 30,01,805 were recovered, and 37,412 had succumbed to the viral infection.
