Actor turned politician and Chief of Makkal Needhi Maiam Kamal Haasan has, on Friday, launched the new initiative to tackle COVID-19 spread in Chennai and to support the affected people in the city in the wake of the outbreak and the lockdown.
Named as 'Naame Theervu' (We are the solution), the actor's initiative aims to roof the volunteers in the city together to aid the people across Chennai as the city has the most number of cases in the state making the residents more vulnerable. The campaign launched on World Environment Day and the veteran actor has said that "Amid our years-long struggle to make our planet green, today we are in the state to turn Chennai into green - from COVID-19 red zone to green zone".
By calling Chennai as the healthcare capital of Tamil Nadu, Kamal Haasan reiterated that the city shouldn't become the Corona capital of the state and the initiative has been launched as the new call for action to tackle COVID-19 in the city. According to Kamal Haasan, this campaign is for Chennai and the volunteer must be the resident of Chennai and these volunteers would be distributing relief materials like masks, sanitizers, and food for the affected people.

In his video message, the actor has announced the help desk number of the initiative (63698 11111) and people who are reaching out to the helpline number will be asked whether to register as a volunteer or about the requirement of the assistance. The actor turned politician has called that this is neither the time for criticism nor for petty politics, rather its time for strong and constructive actions and this is the time when people become the solution.
He further stated that non-governmental organizations and individuals can register themselves to the initiative by reaching out to the helpline. By citing that he has enrolled as a volunteer, Kamal Haasan appealed to people to join as a volunteer towards pulling the city out of the COVID-19 red zone and make it as a green zone.
The actor said that the party's initiative is not against the Central and state governments and called that the governments have to accept the assistance of NGOs. According to Kamal Haasan, states like Odisha, Kerala, and Karnataka have curbed the spread while comparing to Tamil Nadu and stated that the Tamil Nadu government lacks transparency in tackling the spread.
By highlighting that the Kerala government has worked with the NGOs to mitigate the spread, Kamal Haasan added that his new initiative is a movement by the people and for the people.
