At least five people died and thousands evacuated: TN struggles with incessant rainfall!

The state of Tamil Nadu has been struggling for weeks with the incessant rainfall that causes massive disruption and claims dozens of lives. Chennai and different parts of the state have been receiving heavy rainfall since Thursday morning and the current spell of the downpour had killed five people while thousands have been evacuated and housed in temporary shelters. The warning has been issued to Chennai, northern and southern districts that heavy to very heavy rainfall is on the way during the next 48 hours. 

On Friday, Tamil Nadu Revenue Minister KKSSR Ramachandran has said 10,503 people have been accommodated in government relief centres in 12 districts including 620 in five relief centres of the Greater Chennai Corporation. Five people had died in the past two days including Friday while the rainfall and thunderstorms had also killed 150 cattle. A total of 681 huts and 120 concrete houses were damaged. 

The state has recorded 70% excess rainfall during the northeast monsoon for the period between October 1 and November 26 and the minister further said that two National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been stationed in Chengalpet and one team in Kancheepuram to carry out relief works. Tuticorin district had recorded 118.82mm rainfall, the highest for the last 24-hour period ending 6 am on Friday and it is followed by Tirunelveli, Nagapattinam, Virudhunagar, Perambalur, Sivaganga, Dindigul, Madurai, and Kanyakumari. 

It has been reported that extremely heavy rainfall was recorded in three gauging stations in Tuticorin and heavy rainfall between 64.5mm and 115.5mm was recorded in 87 gauging stations across the state. Amid bracing up disruption, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has made a prediction that a fresh low-pressure area is likely to form by next week. 

On Thursday, the IMD has said that a fresh low-pressure area is likely to form over the south Andaman sea around November 29 and this new system will become more marked and move west-northwestwards during the subsequent 48 hours. It must be noted that around 27 districts have declared holiday for schools and colleges on Friday in the wake of rainfall.  

It has been predicted that Chennai will also receive heavy rainfall on Saturday and Sunday while the isolated places over Tiruvallur, Ranipet, and Nilgiris will receive heavy to very heavy rainfall on Sunday. According to reports, dozens of streets in Chennai have been inundated aftermath of the heavy downpour and five trees have fallen overnight in Chennai. The IMD has issued a red alert for southern districts of Tuticorin, Tenkasi, and Tirunelveli as these areas had received intense rainfall on Thursday and will receive more downpours for the next three days.
