Why is North Korea revolving around a bleak lifestyle and why does its leader love peculiarity? This question arose whenever the country's supreme leader Kim Jong-un throws a bombshell before his people that would leave the citizens of other countries to be glad that they weren't North Koreans. A tiny country has never failed to turn global heads towards it through the weird and unpleasant orders and through the governance that goes against human nature. North Korea is probably one of the very few countries in the world that take back their people to the medieval era with awful restrictions.
When the North Koreans are living with fear through ghastly rule, Kim Jong-un has now thrown a fresh bombshell on the citizens, which has triggered global outrage. This time, the supreme leader has banned the North Korean people from laughing or drinking for eleven days. And this order of banning laughing has come in light of marking the tenth death anniversary of Kim Jong-il, who was the former supreme leader of the country.
North Korea will be mourning the death anniversary of Kim Jong-il, the father of Kim Jong-un, for eleven days from December 17 and during these eleven days, North Koreans should not laugh and they should not cry if in case they lost their loved ones. And what may happen to them if they laugh? North Koreans have previous cases that the people who violate the order would be jailed or would be made disappear. During the time of mourning, the people are banned from drinking, celebrating birthdays, shopping, and having leisure events.
Radio Free Asia had quoted a North Korean from the north-eastern border city of Sinuiju as saying that apart from drinking alcohol and laughing, leisure activities are also banned during this period. The agency quoted the source saying that in the past when people were found to be defying these rules, they were treated as ideological criminals who were taken away and never seen again. It has been reported that people are not to allowed to cry out loud during this mourning period even if a family member passes away.
Kim Jong-un's regime had ordered the police to crack down on the people who would harm the mood of collective mourning and as per the order, the police officials have been monitoring people to detain them had they violated the weird ban of laughing and crying. A resident has said that these restrictions happen every year and people will be arrested if they defy them. The people are not allowed to celebrate their birthdays during the mourning period.
Kim Jong-un's father Kim Jong-il ruled North Korea from 1994 to 2011, following which the former came to power. Kim Jong-il had died of a heart attack on December 17 in 2011 at the age of 69 and while the mourning period would normally be for ten days, the current leader has said the country would observe an eleven-day mourning period this year. Earlier this year, Kim Jong-un had banned wearing skinny jeans, sporting mullet hairstyles, and some form of western attires and recently, the country had banned its people from wearing leather trench coats as it is only reserved for Kim Jong-un.
