Killer banners: Judiciary grants bail for the accused!

After having been imprisoned nearly for one and a half months, the Madras High court had on Monday granted conditional bail for the accused who allegedly erected illegal banners that had killed 23-year-old Chennai based techie Subhasree.

By hearing the bail plea of the accused, the state's top judicial body had consented to provide conditional bail for Jayagopal, former ADMK Councilor and his brother-in-law Meghanathan and the court, in its order, had instructed Jayagopal to fund Rs 25,000 each to Chennai's Cancer Institute and Government Stanley hospital with the view of contributing to the treatments of poor and needy patients.

Through the order, the court had further directed Jayagopal to reside in Madurai to ensure that he doesn't influence the witnesses and ordered to appear before a police station in Madurai daily to sign whereas the other accused Meghanathan was directed to sign the register in Chennai until they have been issued with further summons from Alandur court.  Through his bail petition, Jayagopal had claimed that the Chennai city police had added his name in FIR with the motive and he argued that he had played no role in erecting the banners for his son's wedding that was attended by the Deputy Chief Minister Pannerselvam. He further notified that the party's cadres would have erected the banners with love and affection.

On September 12th, 23-year-old Subhsree was driving to her home from her office in one of the city's busiest Radial road that connects IT expressway with Pallavaram and it was afternoon when one of the hundreds of banners that were erected by Jayagopal had hit her vehicle after which she lost her drive and fell on the middle of the road and she was rammed by the truck driving behind her. She has died in the accident that had brought in more accusations against the state government from the people and from the judiciary on observing apathy in implementing the judicial orders to ban the banners. With heated critics, the city's police had registered two cases against Jayagopal under the grounds of erecting the banners without the consent and approval from the Chennai Corporation after which he was allegedly at large.
