In Karunanidhi's way...Udhayanidhi Stalin is ready to contest in TN Polls: Will the voters prove it?

Ending the incessant speculations over whether he will contest in the upcoming assembly polls, Udhayanidhi Stalin, the son of DMK President MK Stalin, has confirmed that he will be contesting in the polls. The development has come after his multiple rounds of campaigning and it has added another feather to the cap of DMK's dynasty politics in electoral politics.

Udhayanidhi Stalin is also serving as the party's youth wing secretary, which is the powerful arm of the party. As he had been taking part in the active campaign trial for the upcoming assembly polls, it was strongly speculated on whether he will contest in the polls. Clearing the clouds of conjectures, Udhayanidhi Stalin has on Thursday confirmed that he is going to plunge into electoral politics and he will be contesting in the upcoming polls.

On Thursday, Udhayanidhi Stalin had submitted an application to the party's leadership to seek a party's ticket to contest from Chepauk-Triplicane legislative constituency in Chennai. He was accompanied by his supporters and the youth wing members had sought a party ticket for him to contest in the constituency which is one of the DMK's strongholds in Chennai.

Speaking to the reporters, Udhayanidhi said that his campaign across the state had received a huge response and the Tamil Nadu people are waiting for a change. By citing that he has been growing in politics steadily, he added that he had applied for a ticket and the party's leadership has to decide whether he should be given a ticket to contest in the polls. Udhayanidhi Stalin is one among the hundreds of party members who had moved the application to seek party tickets for various constituencies across the state.

According to reports, Udhayanidhi has chosen a safe haven to enter the assembly for the first time. Chepauk-Triplicane has been the DMK's fortress in Chennai as the voters from this constituency had a history of sending DMK members to the successive assemblies. Finding a prospect of a comfortable win, Stalin's son has picked this constituency and with a pre-election survey suggesting that the DMK will win the polls, the party leaders expect that the upcoming polls will give a breakthrough for Udhayanidhi Stalin, who is not here only for being a star campaigner.

It must be noted that late DMK President Karunanidhi had been elected as MLA three times from this constituency. Karunanidhi was elected to the assembly from this constituency in the 1996, 2001, and 2006 elections. It was in the 1991 elections that the party had lost this constituency after the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. After 1991, the constituency had voted for the DMK leaders.

Following Karunanidhi, J Anbazhagan, who was close to Stalin, was elected from the Chepauk-Triplicane constituency and he represented the constituency for two consecutive times including in the current assembly. Anbazhagan was one of the senior leaders of the party and during the COVID-19 lockdown, he had involved in providing relief materials to the affected people across the city.

However, during such an event, Anbazhagan had contracted the COVID-19 viral infection and was hospitalized in Chennai. Amid the battle for survival, he had passed away on June 10, 2020, on his 62nd birthday. Following his demise, the constituency hasn't elected the representation for the assembly as the by-election wasn't held owing to the pandemic. Udhayanidhi Stalin has now given an application to seek a party's ticket to contest in the upcoming polls from the Chepauk-Triplicane constituency and his bid to enter the assembly has emerged a question that whether the voters of this constituency prove it again that it has been reserved for DMK.
