In Karnataka, a handful of politicians seem to be in rain of assets as their asset values are coming to light ahead of the crucial assembly polls. The election race in Karnataka between the ruling BJP and the Opposition Congress has been full of beans and as the leaders from both the camps file their nominations to contest in the polls, they took the electorate aback through their growing wealth.
In a 'richie rich' race, some of the politicians in Karnataka have amassed a whopping asset to their wealth regardless of being in the ruling or the opposition camps. Karnataka Congress chief DK Shivakumar is well-known to be one of the political big shots in the state and now, his asset value makes him one of the richest politicians. Shivakumar is a former minister in Karnataka and he is again contesting from the Kanakapura constituency in the upcoming polls.
In his election affidavit, DK Shivakumar has declared that he has assets worth Rs 1214 crore. Notably, the Congress leader's assets have seen a jump by at least 60% from 2018 - made over 500 crores in five years. In 2018, during the previous assembly elections, Shivakumar had declared that he has assets worth Rs 730 crore which also included the assets owned by his wife Usha. In 2018, Shivakumar had movable assets worth Rs 70 crore and now, he has Rs 244 crore worth of movable assets.
While Shivakumar's wife Usha owns assets worth Rs 153 crore, the Congress leader has immovable assets worth Rs 979 crore - the same was worth Rs 548 crore in 2018. Shivakumar has also declared assets for his three children - Aabharana, Aakash, and Aisshwarya. While Aisshwarya owns assets worth Rs 59 crore, the rest two have no higher assets in their kitty.
In total, Shivakumar and his family are worth Rs 1,414 crore. By citing that he has total debt of Rs 226 crore, Shivakumar has also furnished that he has a total of 19 criminal cases pending against him and of these 19, ten cases are related to carrying out protests for the Congress party, four cases are related to income tax evasions, two cases under the Money Laundering Act, and one case is connected to bribery. The Congress leader is also facing charges filed by CBI and Lokayukta in connection with disproportionate assets.
DK Shivakumar further disclosed that he holds 12 bank accounts and some of them are jointly managed by his brother DK Suresh. The Congress leader also claimed that he has only one Toyota car, worth Rs 8.30 lakh, registered under his name. He also declared his annual income as Rs 14.24 crore while his wife earns Rs 1.9 crore annually.
60-year-old Shivakumar is a seven-time MLA and this time, he is planning to get the Chief Minister post in Karnataka if the Congress triumphs in the assembly polls. He has been getting elected from the Kanakapura constituency since May 2008 and he is again contesting from the same seat. In his political stint, Shivakumar had served a minister under three Chief Ministers. He had held the portfolios of Water Resources, Medical Education, and Energy.
