Tamil Nadu is gearing up for the crucial assembly polls that will be held in a single-phase on April 6 and ahead of the polls, prominent leaders in the state have been filing their nominations to contest the elections, and the drive of filing nominations would normally stir the expectations over the wealth and liabilities of the candidates. Likewise, it has now come to the light that actor turned politician Kamal Haasan is the richest candidate in Tamil Nadu in the upcoming assembly polls.
On Monday, state political leaders like Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami (Edappadi), DMK President MK Stalin (Kolathur), Udhayanidhi Stalin (Chepauk- Triplicane), BJP's Vanathi Srinivasan (Coimbatore South), AMMK's TTV Dhinakaran (Kovilpatti), and Naam Tamilar's Seeman (Thiruvottiyur) had filed nominations in their respective constituencies. Kamal Haasan, who is the Chief of Makkal Needhi Maiam, has also filed the nomination to contest in the Coimbatore South constituency.
In his nomination, Kamal Haasan has declared movable assets of Rs 45 crore and immovable assets of over Rs 131 crore. He also has underlined that his income for the year 2019-2020 as per his tax returns was Rs 22.1 crore. Under the category of movable assets, the actor turned politician had declared Rs 2.43 crore in bank deposits, Rs 26.1 lakh in investments such as mutual funds and shares, and Rs 2.39 crore in insurance.
He also said that he has Rs 36.24 crore in personal loans and Rs 3.69 crore in luxury vehicles. The Padmashri actor has declared that he has two luxury cars - a BMW 730LD and Lexus Lx 570 and along with cash in hand, his movable assets totally amount to over Rs 45 crore. In the immovable assets, Kamal Haasan owns agricultural land that is currently worth Rs 17.79 crore, which covers a total of around 36 acres.
He also owns the commercial buildings in Chennai and the market value of these commercial buildings is at Rs 92.05 crore. Under the grounds of residential buildings, Kamal Haasan has two properties in Chennai that are currently worth Rs 19.5 crore and the actor jointly owns a property in London that is currently worth Rs 2.5 crore. On his liabilities front, Kamal Haasan has Rs 49.5 crore in liabilities.
His liabilities include Rs 33.16 crore in housing loans, mortgage loans, insurance loans, and other loans and the rest of the liabilities are in form of dues payable to individuals and entities. In total, as per his declaration, Kamal Haasan is worth Rs 177 crore and his whopping wealth has made him the richest candidate in Tamil Nadu. It must be noted that the upcoming election is the first election where Kamal Haasan will be contesting and it is also the first legislative election for his party.
Kamal Haasan had established his political party Makkal Needhi Maiam in February 2018 and he hasn't contested in any elections but he fielded the candidates for the 2019 Lok Sabha polls in Tamil Nadu and his party ended up securing 3.75% votes. After two years, his party is all set to contest in the assembly polls, and while speaking about his priority for the constituency of Coimbatore South, Kamal Haasan said there are many projects which remain at the stake like roads, drinking water, and the expansion of the airport. He added that he wants to build Coimbatore a model city not only at the Indian level but at the international level.
Kamal Haasan has formed the third front in the assembly polls by signing a deal with Sarathkumar's Samathuva Makkal Katchi (SMK) and Parivendar's Indhiya Jananayaga Katchi (IJK). Tamil Nadu has 234 seats and as per the deal, Kamal's Makkal Needhi Maiam will be contesting in 154 seats while SMK and IJK will be contesting from 40 seats each. Kamal Haasan has been named as the Chief Ministerial candidate of the front and the state will be going for the assembly polls on April 6 and the votes will be counted on May 2, during which the results will be announced.
