From the moment of pronouncing the death sentence, the Nirbhaya case convicts have been battling on the legal grounds by approaching the Supreme court and the President with their curative and mercy petitions to stay off from getting executed despite exhausting their legal options.
Adding to the dozens of pleas, one of the convicts Akshay Singh had, on Thursday, approached the Delhi court with the fresh petition to seek the court's directive to halt the execution. The reports say that this is the latest plea that has been filed by the convict two days ahead of the scheduled execution.
It was the second petition moved by Akshay Singh and his curative petition that was filed earlier in the Supreme court with the view of challenging the death sentence would be listed out for the hearing today.
On the other hand, the counsel of Vinay Sharma, one among the convicts, had tabled his mercy petition before the President and his lawyer has claimed that he had died several times in the prison during his tenure of imprisonment. According to the PTI news agency, in his petition, Vinay Sharma has stated that "I'm submitting this mercy petition with the hope that you would listen to my story when nobody did. This is the last chance to tell how the terrible circumstances of that fateful day in December 2012 changed my life and I want to tell you so that you can decide whether a death sentence is the only punishment I deserve".
A fortnight ago, the President had rejected the mercy petition filed by Mukesh Singh with accord to the recommendation of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. Earlier this month, the Delhi court had issued a fresh death warrant against all the four convicts in which it has ordered to execute them on February 1st, 2020 at 6 am in Tihar Prison complex, where they have been lodged currently.
