What ADMK thought of having a crucial push in the assembly polls through the manifesto doesn't receive well by the Central ruling BJP, which observes an alliance with the state ruling party as the poll promises had stirred a divide between ADMK and BJP and displayed that the alliance may witness a dispute over the manifesto.
On Sunday, the Tamil Nadu ruling ADMK had unveiled the election manifesto for the upcoming polls, and apart from announcing freebies and loan waivers, the party has promised that it will push the Central government to drop off the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) 2019. The promise of demanding the Center to repeal the CAA didn't catch up well by the BJP as the Central ruling party had voiced against this promise and claimed that the manifesto was just ADMK's and not the NDA's.
BJP had also said that it will speak with the ADMK leadership to remove this promise from the manifesto. Speaking to a news agency, BJP's Tamil Nadu in-charge CT Ravi said that the manifesto was ADMK's and maintained that the BJP government had given justice to the people who were waiting for citizenship for over five to seven decades and no one has faced injustice through this act as the government hasn't taken away the citizenship.
CT Ravi further said that the ADMK hadn't discussed with BJP over the manifesto and added that the Central ruling party will demand the ADMK to remove the promise of demanding the Center to repeal the CAA from the manifesto. Ravi's statement had shown that the BJP distances itself away from the ADMK's manifesto and on Monday, Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami said that ADMK will insist the Central government repeal the CAA.
While responding to the promise on the manifesto to urge the Center to drop CAA, the Chief Minister said, "The ADMK government will protect the minorities. We have announced that we will insist that the Center revoke the CAA". He claimed that the ADMK is the only party that protects the interest of minorities.
However, ADMK had acted against what it says in the manifesto. It must be noted that the ADMK party had played a pivotal role in passing the CAA in the Parliament when the opposition and the whole nation were protesting against the act. The bill was introduced in 2019 after Narendra Modi formed his second government. When the bill was tabled in the Rajya Sabha, 125 MPs had voted in favor of the bill while 99 had voted against it. Eleven ADMK MPs in Rajya Sabha had voted in support of the bill while ADMK's lone MP in Lok Sabha, OP Raveendranath, had voted in support of the bill.
Two years later, three weeks ahead of the assembly polls, the ADMK had promised that it will urge the Center to repeal the CAA and the BJP had reacted strongly that the manifesto is of ADMK's not of NDAs, which displayed a divide in the alliance. In the manifesto, the ADMK had also announced the freebies including free washing machines, solar stoves, free cable connection, a reduction in fuel prices, loan waivers, six free cylinders, and 2GB data for students.
