Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has on Thursday addressed the assembly session during which he mentioned that the announcement from the Governor in his customary speech to the assembly as just a trailer and said that the DMK government would take necessary steps to meet the promises given to the people by the party during the election campaign for the recently-held assembly polls.
The first session of the current assembly had begun earlier this week and it was planned for three days. In what has become the first session since MK Stalin assumed the office of the Chief Minister, the session has hit its last day on Thursday. The session was busy with debating Governor Banwarilal Purohit's speech and announcements on the first day and as a custom, the Chief Minister addressed the assembly on Wednesday to close the current session.
During his address, MK Stalin said, "I thank the people of Tamil Nadu for electing me. I'm the political heir of Arignar Anna (CN Annadurai) and the ideological heir of Karunanidhi. Governor's speech is just a trailer and we will fulfil the promises that we have made, we definitely will. We have been meeting and fulfilling the promises since the first day of our reign." Stalin's speech has been going viral as several DMK supporters are sharing it on social media.
The assembly session was held at Kalaivanar Arangam Chennai and the assembly had seen the BJP MLAs for the first time in two decades. The BJP had contested in the assembly polls in the ADMK's alliance and while DMK had secured a spectacular victory, the ADMK alliance had got 75 seats off 234 seats. Of these 75, 66 were won by ADMK, which had become the opposition party.
After a month of forming the new government, the first session of the assembly had commenced earlier this week and was held till Thursday. The session has begun with the Governor's customary speech during which the head of the state had emphasized state autonomy and federalism and said that the state government will sternly stand in defence of the rights of the states and constitutionally oppose any infringement of such rights.
He said, "At the same time, we (Tamil Nadu) will maintain a cordial relationship with the Union government as partners in the process of nation-building, in line with our policy of extending our hand in friendship, even as we speak up for our rights." By highlighting that the government is guided by the ethos of the Dravidian movement, Purohit said social justice, gender equality, economic equity, the opportunity for all through reservations, and progress through education and social reforms will drive every legislation and every scheme of the new government.
