India is doing worse than its neighbors in the global happiness report as the world's largest democracy is living unhappily than the autocratic countries. The eroding grounds of happiness in India had alarmed the country that the state of uncertainty and distress has been pervasive across its territory and displayed that the 'smile' is not real happiness but it depends on their lifestyles and their trust over the government.
The United Nations has released the UN World Happiness Report 2021 on Friday, which pushed India to brace up the shocking revelation. The Happiness Report had covered 149 countries on how happy their citizens perceive themselves to be. The 2021 report has been released by the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network focuses on the effects of COVID-19 and how people all over the world have fared.
In its statement, the report said, "Our aim was two-fold, first to focus on the effects of COVID-19 on the structure and quality of people's lives, and second to describe and evaluate how governments all over the world have dealt with the pandemic. In particular, we try to explain why some countries have done so much better than others".
In the ratings of 149 countries, India is spotted at 139th spot in the 2021 report, which is behind some of its weak neighbors. The UN report said that there have been in-person and telephone samples for India, with the in-person responses being lower than telephone responses, while significantly higher than in-person responses in 2019. Hence the reversal in 2020 of the longer-term slide in Indian life evaluations was not attributable to mode effects".
The report has covered the state happiness in 2020 in which India was at 139th spot. In 2019, India was ranked 140th. India's neighbors are living happily than India with Pakistan ranked in 105th spot, Bangladesh in 101st, and China in 84th. According to the report, Finland has been ranked as the happiest country in the world for the fourth year in a row.
Following Finland are the European countries like Iceland (2), Denmark (3), Switzerland (4), the Netherlands (5), Sweden (6), Germany (7), and Norway (8). On the front of the least happy countries, Afghanistan is the most unhappy country and spotted at 149th rank while Zimbabwe is at 148th rank, Rwanda at 147, Botswana at 146, and Lesotho at 145.
The happiness study ranks the countries of the world on the basis of questions from the Gallup World Poll and the results are then correlated with other factors including the country's GDP and social security. Though being one of the richest countries in the world, the United States is ranked at 19th place for happiness. The Happiness report has come as shock to India, days after the Freedom House report had downgraded India from a 'Free' to 'Partly-free' country in the wake of rising authoritarianism over its democratic values.
