Within a day after getting appointed as the BJP's national secretary, Anupam Hazra, who is one of the leaders of the Central ruling party in West Bengal, has invited trouble over his controversial remarks, that had drawn massive flak from the leaders of the state ruling party who had filed a case against the BJP leader.

Hazra went on to say that he would hug Mamata Banerjee to make her feel the pain of the families of COVID-19 patients. While addressing in the event, Hazra stated that the workers of the BJP in the state are fighting a bigger enemy than Corona. They are fighting Mamata Banerjee and the workers are able to fight Mamata Banerjee without a mask, they think they can also fight against COVID-19 without wearing a mask.
By citing that he has decided to hug Mamata Banerjee if he gets infected by the pandemic, Hazra stated that the Chief Minister has been treating victims of the disease pathetically and their bodies were burnt with kerosene, and the government is not allowing children to see the face of their parents who succumbed to the pandemic.

After his remarks had stirred controversy, the Trinamool Congress party (TMC) has filed a police complaint against Hazra for his remarks of hugging the Chief Minister. Senior TMC leader Saugato Roy had condemned the remarks and that the comment reflects the mindset of the Central ruling party. The TMC's unit in Siliguri, West Bengal had held a rally against Hazra and filed a police complaint against the BJP national secretary.
According to PTI, Anupam Hazra had responded to the complaint and said that Mamata Banerjee had also made several controversial remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He claimed that if he had made demeaning comments, Mamata Banerjee had also made such comments against the Prime Minister.
Hazra went on to say that if an FIR has been filed against him, at least ten FIRs must be filed against the leaders of the TMC. Hazra was the former MP from TMC and last year, he quitted Mamata's faction and joined BJP. The police complaint has been filed against him at the Siliguri police station in Darjeeling district under the grounds that Hazra had maligned a public figure, who is a woman, in violation of the constitution and hurting the sentiments.
The state BJP leaders stayed off from Hazra's comments. Newly-appointed BJP's vice president Mukul Roy said that those in positions of responsibility must be careful about what they speak.
