How important May month is for India in its fight against COVID-19?

By this time next Monday, India would be settling down for what could be another spell of the extraordinary measure to fight against the Coronavirus pandemic as the Central government is highly considering to extend the nationwide lockdown for at least two more weeks beyond May 3 to curb the spread of the virus, which has got the grounds of rampant spread not only in India but across the globe.

The month of May becomes very crucial for India in its combating mission against the virus as the Central and state governments would be burdened with delivering the guidelines to grip up the fight as well as to ensure to roll out the remedies to revive the ailing economy. The guidelines beyond May 3 would set out how the country will look like for the entire month to deal with the unprecedented ordeals of health care and economical crisis.

According to medical experts, it becomes imperative for India to impose an aggressive containment strategy for the national hotspots along with shielding the green zones while the government pours some relaxations on the restrictions. The experts advised the government to keep the transportation channels - railways, interstate bus services, airways to shut for the entire May month along with keeping the ban alive on the malls, religious places, and shopping complexes, and other recreational centers to mitigate the movement of people.

According to PTI, the experts indicated that the country must understand the nationwide lockdown won't kill the virus, instead, it slows the spread and the lockdown should be continued in the Red zones for more than two weeks beyond May 3 while the green zones can be given with some relaxations by ensuring that these zones won't mingle each other. They further suggested that the borders of the green zones must be sealed off by allowing limited activities.

People in these zones should be mandated to add social distancing, hand washing, and wearing masks as part of their lifestyle whereas, for red zones, the lockdown must remain in place till these regions report flattening curve. Some of the experts divulged that any major relaxations at this time would leave the country to face more disastrous situations as May month would be very crucial for the country.

They reiterated that the government must keep the restrictions in place for at least four more weeks as the country has been reporting soaring high cases. India stands at a better place while comparing to other major countries as the death toll in the country remains low than in major countries. However, the country should remain vigil and in order to pillar the country's fight against the virus, the government should focus on the containment strategy in the red zones for the entire month.

Two weeks ago, India had reported 170 hotspot districts across its territory and the number has reduced and currently stands at 129 but at the same time, the number of the green zones or COVID-19 free districts had also decreased from 325 to 307, according to the reports and the figures indicate the current state of the human to human transmitting virus in the country. The government would also concentrate on easing the pain of people and it should ensure that the lockdown would no way lead to the hunger crisis.

On Monday, while speaking to the Chief Ministers, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the country will have to give importance to the economy while fighting against the virus and on Wednesday, the Center has signaled that the lockdown would be extended beyond May 3 with pouring some relaxations. The government has identified 15 districts in nine states, including Maharashtra, Delhi, and Gujarat which have been reporting a sharp rise in the number of cases.

NITI Aayog Chief Amitabh Kant took to Twitter and said that these 15 districts are critical in government's battle against the virus and India's success in the battle would depend on how the country treat, monitor, contain these districts. According to the reports, if the government extends the lockdown, it would be the second extension for the lockdown that was imposed on March 24 and the country remains under shutdown since then. The extended spell would come to an end on Sunday as India gets into the crucial month in its COVID-19 fight! India has reported 35,043 positive cases so far as of Friday morning of which 8889 have recovered while 1147 have died. The country reported 66 fatalities on Thursday, according to the Union Health Ministry.
