Honoring the legend: BCCI eyes to conduct a farewell match for MS Dhoni- When can we expect?

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been considering to honor the legend and India's most successful captain by hosting a farewell match after the current season of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

India's most successful and celebrated captain MS Dhoni has announced his retirement from the international cricket from nowhere on August 15 at the age of 39. As the announcement came all of a sudden when he has been camped in Chennai, it had shocked the fans across and beyond the borders. While they celebrated their favorite and unparalleled captain with his memories and contribution to the Indian Cricket team, they also expected that Dhoni must be honored through the farewell match.

Now, giving life to the expectation, the BCCI has been willing to host a farewell match for Dhoni after the conclusion of the IPL 2020. According to the IANS, a senior BCCI official said that the board will reach out to Dhoni in the sidelines of the IPL 2020 and it would plan accordingly for conducting the farewell match.

The official stated that Dhoni has done a lot for the nation and he deserves all the respect and as there is no international series currently, the board will look on what can be done after the IPL season. By citing that the board always wished to have a farewell match for the former Indian captain, the official said that Dhoni is a different player and he has announced his retirement when no one was thinking of it.

While asked about if the board had reached out to Dhoni regarding the farewell match, the official said that the board is yet to speak with the legendary player and it will surely speak to him during the IPL as it would be the right place to get this opinion about a match or series. However, the official said that the board will conduct a proper felicitation ceremony no matter if he agrees or not and it would the board's honor to felicitate him.

Dhoni has been an asset and treasure for the team and during his career as Man in Blue, he led the team through his able, stable, and promising leadership and he had lifted many trophies successfully which his predecessors had dreamt off. He led the Indian team and won the ICC T20 World Cup (2007), the ICC World Cup (2011), and ICC Champions Trophy (2013). He is the only captain in the history of cricket to win all the ICC trophies.

Often nicknamed as Captain Cool, Dhoni had made his retirement announcement through a simple Instagram post on August 15- when India has marked 74th Independence Day. Minutes after his announcement, one of his trusted commanders Suresh Raina had also announced his retirement. Dhoni didn't play any competitive cricket after the 2019 World Cup defeat to New Zealand.

Dhoni will be rocking the field as 'Man in Yellow' as he will be playing for the Chennai Super Kings in the upcoming IPL season, which will kickstart from September 19 in the United Arab Emirates. Earlier, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren had also sought a farewell match for the legendary captain and he has moved his appeal to the BCCI. Former Indian Cricketer Madan Lal had also agreed to hold a proper farewell match for MS Dhoni.
