When Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had been receiving a rousing welcome during his historical state visit to the United States, the black trucks have come as a spoilsport for his significant tour as they drove to the streets of New York with the posters that define Modi's contentious regime in India. For Modi, who boasts his leadership, these posters came as a shocker as they displayed his flawed-record as India's leader to the American public.
The posters labeled Modi as the crime minister of India and urged US President Joe Biden to ask Modi about the controversial events including the ongoing unrest in the BJP-ruling Manipur, the protests of women wrestlers against BJP MP Brij Bhushan Singh, and the Modi's regime ban on the BBC documentary. While Modi's US visit has been making headlines, these digitial posters have turned heads.
Besides displaying the hashtag Crime Minister of India, one of the digital posters that addressed to Joe Biden asked, "Hey Joe, ask Modi why he banned the 2023 BBC documentary 'India: The Modi Question'". The posters had also displayed the hashtag 'Gujarat Genocide'. Another banner read, "Why was Modi banned from the USA from 2005-2014."
In a Q & A format, one banner said, "Q: Why was Modi banned from the USA from 2005-2014? A: For 'particularly severe violations of religious freedom'. The only person ever to be denied a visa on these grounds." One of the banners had also highlighted the recent ethnic violence in Manipur which killed over 100 people and injured 300 others.
Citing the detention of student activist Umar Khalid in India, one of the banners said, "Hey Joe! Ask Modi why student activist Umar Khalid has been imprisoned for over 1000 days without trial?" The banners had also accused Narendra Modi of suppressing human rights in India. Highlighting the surging mob lynchings faced by the minorities in India, another banner said, "Did you know mob lynching of Muslims, Christians, and Dalits have surged under Modi's rule. With almost no accountability."
Highlighting the women protests in Delhi, another digital poster said, "Hey Joe! Ask Modi, why female Olympians were detained while protesting sexual assault by his own Minister (MP)?" These trucks were seen on the streets of New York City on Wednesday when Modi was in the city and was preparing to meet US President Joe Biden.
It is pertinent to note that more than seventy US Senators had written to Biden, urging him to raise concerns about the suppression of religious, press, and political freedoms in India. According to reports, senators including Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, and Tim Kaine have signed the letter that was sent to Biden.
