By keeping aside the existing formalities of detaining the people who cause public nuisance and disharmony, the police department of Tirunelveli district in Tamil Nadu has directed the school students who were reportedly clashing in Palayamkottai bus stand to write all 1330 couplets of Thirukkural as punishment.
The unusual and unseen punishment awarded for the students by the police has come at the high and crucial time when the state of Tamil Nadu has been witnessing series of controversies and heated arguments combined to pull ancient Tamil poet Thiruvalluvar into politics. The reports say that the Tirunelveli police have recently surrounded about 49 school students who reportedly clashed in front of the public in Palaymkottai bus stand a week ago. Without lodging them in prisons, the students were issued with orders to write the entire couplets of Thirukkural as the form of punishment.
The police inspector of Palaymkottai, Thillai Nagarajan said that on October 29th, the police station was reported with the series of clashes between the student groups in the city's bus stand by creating major disturbances for the public. After being informed about the incident, the students were identified through the surveillance camera installed in the bus stand and located them in their schools. He stated that during the investigations, the students expressed that they weren't clear on the reason which erupted the clashes. The police department had informed the parents of the students.
The inspector cited that they had given proper counseling to the parents and ordered the students to write all the couplets of Thirukkural and report back to the station on Wednesday. Despite the timeline, few students have reported back to the police station while the rest failed to turn up and he added that they had called all of them to report to the station to complete their punishments by camping in the station. By staying off from levying legal actions against the students, the police inspector revealed that they have given such punishment by considering the age as they belong to the age category of 16-17 years and by detaining them behind the bars for the minor issue would eventually affect their studies.
