By finishing off in style, the Indian cricket team has been in the rain of wishes from across and beyond the borders. India has defeated England by ten wickets in the third Test match that was held in Ahmedabad in what has become one of the remarkable victories in its Test cricket history. This victory was made possible by the sheer brilliance of bowlers Axar Patel and Ravichandran Ashwin as the spinning duo had blown off the visitors.
Ashwin and Axar had delivered a splendid show in the pink ball and restricted the English players from scoring big. In the first innings, England was bowled out for 112 runs with Axar taking six wickets, for the first time, and Ashwin taking three wickets. India opened up the innings and it had followed flawed performances like visitors but it had managed to score 145 runs with the lead of 33 runs. With 33 runs behind, the visitors began their second innings only to witness a stumbling show.
England was bowled out for 81 runs and the two spinners had shined in the second innings too- Axar Patel has got five wickets and Ashwin had ended by getting four wickets. England has recorded one of the lowest test scores and the visitors had given 49 runs target for the host. In total, Axar has got 11 wickets while Ashwin has got seven. Rohit Sharma and Shubnam Gill had opened the innings to chase the lenient target. With no flaws, India had hit the target in the eighth over and recorded a magnificent victory by ten wickets in the world's largest cricket stadium.
With the victory, India has taken the lead in a four-match Test series by 2-1 and Axar Patel was selected as the Player of the Match. While addressing the post-match presentation, Indian Skipper Virat Kohli said Ashwin is a modern-day legend. Kohli said, "We all need to stand up and take notice of what Ashwin has contributed to the Indian Cricket. We should all be very proud of it".
"I told him from now I'm gonna call you (Ashwin) legend. 400 (wickets) is an outstanding achievement and still so many and so many years to go for India. I think in Test match cricket, he is surely a modern-day legend and we are just lucky to have him on our team. His skillsets and how he applies himself and makes those breakful performances for the team every now and then and as a captain, I'm so pleased that he plays for us", Kohli added and hailed Ashwin.
Ashwin has set a 'WOW' record and he is the first Indian bowler to achieve this record - Ashwin has become the second-fastest bowler to pick up 400 Test wickets. He has achieved this milestone in 77th Test while Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralidharan had taken 400 wickets in 72 Test matches. While becoming the first Indian fastest bowler to take 400 wickets, Ashwin has become the fourth Indian bowler to pick up 400 Test wickets after Kapil Dev, Anil Kumble, and Harbhajan Singh.
Axar Patel was picked as the Man of the Match as he has got 11 wickets in total. Speaking at the post-match presentation, Axar said, "When it happens, it feels so easy. I am not thinking much. I want to continue this form. I am happy that if I am not contributing with the bat, I am doing it with the ball. I would want this wicket to remain the same for the final test as well as I am picking up wickets".
With the impressive victory, Virat Kohli has become the most successful Indian Test captain at home as he has captained India in 32 home tests of which the team had won 22 matches. The victory had also taken India on the top of the ICC's points table in Test ratings and it also has become India's quickest victory in Test cricket in terms of balls bowled. The victory has presented a slew of milestones for India - Ashwin's 400th wicket, Kohli's tag of the most successful Indian captain, Hitting the top of the table and recording the quickest victory in its history.
