Congress leaders Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi had on Saturday met the family members of the 19-year-old Dalit woman in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh, amid the high security and outrage. The woman was gang-raped by four upper-caste men and she had died on Tuesday in Delhi.
As the Congress party delegation of MPs headed by Rahul Gandhi had on Saturday traveled to Uttar Pradesh to meet the grieving family of the 19-year-old gang-rape victim in Hathras, the state government has permitted only a group of five persons from the delegation to meet the family amid brewing outrage across the state and the nation.
With the protests have been centered at Uttar Pradesh, Rahul Gandhi has been heading to the village along with the senior leaders and MPs for the second time in two days. On Thursday, when he attempted to visit the village, he was detained by the Uttar Pradesh police under section 188 of the IPC for violating the curfew orders imposed by the state government. Despite the curfew, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, and other leaders had marched on the highway following which there was a melee between the police and Congress party workers with the latter accused the former of pushing and lathi-charging the leader.

As he was detained in his first attempt, Rahul Gandhi had on Saturday said that he would be visiting the village today and stated that no force in the world can stop him from meeting the grieving family of the Dalit woman, who was gang-raped by four upper-caste men during the second week of September. She has died on Tuesday due to the grave injuries, which had sparked protests and outrage.
Rahul Gandhi and his delegation had reached the Uttar Pradesh border and they were welcomed by the security forces. The security forces had stopped the Congress workers at the borders and allowed only five members of the delegation to enter the border and to meet the family members of the victims.

According to our sources, Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal, Congress Lok Sabha leader Adhir Ranjan Choudhury, and Congress Rajya Sabha leader Ghulam Nabi Azad had visited the family members of the victim amid high security. However, ahead of the Congress leaders visit, Additional Chief Secretary of Uttar Pradesh Avnish Aswathi had met the family members of the victims on Saturday.
After meeting the family, Aswathi said, "We met the family of the victim and assured them that stringent action will be taken against the guilty. SIT is investigating the case. Statements of the family members being recorded". He further stated that the group of five persons from the Congress delegation can meet the victim's family.
The police had arrested four men in connection to the case and following her demise, the state government announced Rs 25 lakh as compensation to the family members along with a government job for one of the family members. The state government has also installed a Special Investigative Team (SIT) to probe the matter and disclose the report to the government.
